I've seen the numbers 1 in 150 and 1 in 166 around the internet, depending on location a population was sampled and year the data was sampled.

asd's need to be diagnosed more (especially if we are to win out over the "cure" camp... there really is strength in numbers), they need to be correctly diagnosed (i.e. not diagnose people who are just trying to fish for some kind of diagnosis), and there needs to be more acceptance of asd's as mere variants as opposed to "abnormal" (basically the whole neurodiversity argument)...

I'm beginning to see the trend. I feel that the Psychology business has to continue making it's revenue by vastly broadening it's scope on 'cruxes'. Not to be demeaning or condescending, but this science is in vogue, and many students need jobs. You do realize, that the DSM will be at least ten pounds by the end of this decade, right?

Autism, as the new supposed fad, will be getting money from the government. So parents whose children would benefit from the help given to autistic children (even if they aren't actually autistic) will get the diagnosis and the help. Many learning difficulties, speech pathologies etc.. would benefit.

The result, however will be that the resources will go away from those who actually have autism.

I agree; particularly in females and in older people. Also, if we become a larger minority within society, we will have more clout. It would not surprise me if the true figure for autism is at least 2%-3% of the world's population.
