i have had a chorus of kids who would regularly chant "nerd nerd nerd nerd" ...at me in my jr; high math class...and a squad of metal head girls who picked on me and threatened me on a regular basis who called me a nerd
I have been called nerd repeatedly by kids who were supposed to be my friends.....when I was in the GT class with the supposedly smarter kids...I was seen as something like that....I was seen as the class nerd...only dumber than the rest of the class (who had been in the gifted program since the 3rd grade whereas I joined in the 8th grade)

There were other names too..but nerd was the most common..I was proud of it when i was young, but gradually needed to adapt to a way of being that made me less of a target.
Now I am mostly nerdy on the inside.

back when i used to be in school people used to call me "the powerchair kid" cuz im a powerchair geek...

That's what I told my boys! In fact, there's a nursing school at the college where my younger boy goes. I told him to hang out there, feign an injury and meet a nice young lady. It's a plan! Of course, he thought I was kidding, but I'm not, at least about hanging out by the nursing school.

Strereotypic (Again) Topics

I was not considered a nerd as this word was not in common use in the 60s, at least at my elementary school. I jsut know I was not called by my first name by boys until I was in my teens, and then these same boys became sexually aggressive. It was classic bullying. I was either ignored or harrassed. Now I am proud of my last name and often introduce myself as last name before the first. I have reclaimed my name as my own. Those bullies would not succeed in shaming me permanently.

I don't think I ever met the criteria of being a nerd. I was socially frustrated, but coped by being a smart-alec. I called myself a geek often, because of who I like to be around and how passionate I was about my rather unique interests from the people around me.

I'm a nerd and proud of it!

I had thought of starting a topic that was called "I'm such a geek/nerd that..."

...I had a slide rule tie clip!

...I still have my slide rule and all the math tables on paper!
(and still remember how to use them)

...I never knew what they ment when they said your clothes don't match!

...I spent all of study hall either reading scifi or in the school's computer room (back in the 70's, when a high school computer room was 2 teletype machines, a card punch, a card reader, and an aucstic coupler)

...Girls were (and still are) a totally alien race!

People used to call me a nerd. I hated it.

Then I went goth.

I am thinking about becoming goth, or converting to Wicca, just for the shock value in my town.

That reminds me of the time my liberal uncle pretended to be gay to shock a homophobe.

I only got consistently called a nerd during some 6 months I spent at a very crappy school. I was even accused of doing math in my free time. Oddly enough, as far as that school went, I didn't really need to study to do the stuff. I didn't have top grades either.
. . .and I used to be mediocre at math; grades-wise, at least.

Then, around that time, I was harassed for using a more extended vocabulary and for flaunting my knowledge of astronomy/astrophysics.

Other than that, I was considered "a weirdo", "crazy", "intellectual". . . depending on the other part's venom.
Some people just seemed to think I was smart; which, for some reason, feels strange as it's the last thing I'd normally expect.

I don't fit the nerd stereotype at all; I do not fit it now and I did not fit it when I was in primary school or anywhere in between.
