Okay!! Wrong Planet is full of wonderful people but now it's time to create a new section on this site that's dedicated to building on our strengths together to create the communities we need, whether it be schools or activist newspapers or corporations where we can call each other's ideas stupid and not get fired for our bluntness.

Becky,

It sounds to me as though you are talking about what would be called "intentional communities":

Actually, if a school here in the US in following the special education mandates, they can tailor ASD kids programming for them so that the experience is more beneficial. Same goes for universities. By law, the have to make accommodations. I'm seeing in my job, that most parents assume that their kid can't go to school after high school because they won't get the accommodations that were available to them in high school. The reality is that those things must be provided, however, in high school, they are mandated to happen and students have a right to them. After they turn 18 or graduate, those services aren't mandated and the student becomes eligible for them. So, it's all in figuring out what needs to be done and doing it. Gotta open your mouth and ask. If they won't do it, then you take your money somewhere else. It's that easy.

Just make sure that if your dorm is advertised as a "quiet hall", make sure the school's hockey team or other jocks don't live on the floor above or below you. Try to live on the top floor of the dorm, if at all possible.

Am I the only one who thinks that the class sizes would have to be REAL small?? On the other hand, the best class I ever took in college was a subject I hated but had to have to graduate, Philosophy. There were 5 of us and the Professor. GREAT class. I think because of the size.

They're actually building a school for autistic kids literally on the next street from where I live; the rule is no more than two kids to a teacher.
