Anyways richardbenson do some reacherch before you go and buy one because you may need to register it with the dept of motor vehicles, also it may be illegal to operate some of these on roads and sidewalks.
damn son really? thats gonna suck, cant you drive a scooter without a licence? i cant get one because i will fail. people looking over my shoulder makes me uncomfortable plus hows the instructor gonna get on with me? scooters are small! and i have sensory issues with people touching my ass :D

well... you dont need a license to operate these matchines at least in NY and I am assuming most of the US, if not all, but you may need to register it if you plan on driving on the roads/sidewalks. The reason is that these vehicles are subject to the same vehicular laws as cars, so you will need a license plate and paper work and quite possibly inshurance. Now dont go by solely on what I am saying because I have seen this in NY, you gotta figure out the laws for your own state, things vary but if you plan on driving on the road without a bike plan on caughing up money to the government for a peice of paper and a metal tag, possibly even very basic inshurace that at the minumum will pay for damages or injuries of the other person or proporty in the event of an accident.

Check your states DMV website for information, I have seen registration forms in NY for cars + commercial vehicles, commercial trucks, boats, 4 wheelers, motocycles and mopedheads and thats only what i can remember.

you cant push a bike on the sidewalk unless you are dismounted? thats funny as hell, i see people riding bikes on the sidewalks here all the time. :geek:

Technically you are supposed to use the road. Unless it like a small child or something. They have special bike path that often run along side pavements also.

I think at night you may be more likly to get caught on a mopedhead to be honest then during the day cause during the day at least around here their are less cops. I would recomend making the investment and driving ligit so you have nothing to worry about cause if you get caught then you will pay a fine and even maby get your scooter or whatever confiscated. The initial investment may be a better investment in the long run then gettin into trouble costing ya time, effort and money, even your vehicle.

whats 49cc? BTW, i like your avatar :)

cc in this context represents cylinder displacement, and is short for Cubic Centimeters.

49cc is pretty small, but apparently not exactly the smallest engine for a goped. Mopeds apparently have to be less than 50cc. A KIDS motorcycle will probably be over 80cc. A regular motorcycle is probably over 400cc. My first car was average for a low level 4door in 1983, and it was 1900cc.

Obviously, all things being equal, larger means more power.

Regarding laws, at least in california?

Quote:
Scooter navigators must be at least 16 years old, get properly licensed, wear a helmet, and know where he/she can legally drive the scooter.

Scooters may be driven on bike paths and trails, but never on sidewalks. They can also be used on roadways with bike lanes, as well as n streets with no bike lanes and speed limits of 25 mph or less. When on a road with no bike lane, scooters should be ridden as close to the right hand curb as possible (unless passing or turning right).

awesome. im gonna look into getting one :)

Same here! I'm currently looking into what's required for a motorcycle license, though I plan on getting it sometime. I'm sure it varies from state-to-state, but here in New Jersey a motorscooter is legally treated as a motorcycle. I guess though, it would be pretty awesome to have the freedom to buy a motorcycle down the line, if that ever came up.

Got a 49cc vespa atm (not really a kids thing, it goes about 50mph/80 km/h), it's awesome :D
I tried to get a car license once but almost wrecked the car a couple of times when i had to do too much things at once and the instructor started yelling at me.

i don't drive, and i can't ride a bike.. but i've considered something like a moped... but i donno.. i think i might prefer a golf cart.. :D you'd be surprised how many people drive around golf carts here.. lol. and i don't think there are even any golf courses within 50 miles. plus, i don't know, but i don't think you need a license for a golf cart.. i've seen kids driving them around, anyways.
