There is a series of movies called "mah jong kung fu" (1, 2, maybe more?) - very funny even if you usually don't like kung fu movies.

Excuse me Age1600 but I digress.

have you tried Go (Wei Ch'i)?

I like it. It's a good hobby.

I have the same problem with Go.

I have attention problem with it. I can't be patient enough to sit and think through many possible moves, so just go ahead and make the next one.

You play lightning Go? :D

I have an poor attention span but it is inextricably liked to my executive dysfuntion. If I tried to think through every move I would burn up. Also you don't want to take too long, because the other player probably want you to get a move on too. Then again there are ultra slow game that last 10+ hours.

I haven't actually played in a while it would be good to get coaching. It might help improve my faculties. I traveled to a place in north London once, but it turned out it wasn't being held there or at least those at the door were unaware of it.

I've played the computer Mah Jong.

So now I'm wondering how different the board version is from the computer version?

Can you play it alone... how about Go.. can you play that alone also?
Since I spend most of my free time alone, I like games that I can play solo.

The board version is completely different from the computer version. The computer version is matching and stuff, the board version is where you have to make certian suits, and you go in rounds, and each suit it worth amount of cent, and you get jokers. Its like cards, with tiles, different patterns, different colors, and you can line them up haha. When you win the game, you yell MAH JONGG! So a lot of ppl have mah jongg confused with the computer game, its nothing like matching certian tiles up to beat the game, nothing like that at all!

Thanks
I'm still interested in finding out more.
I'll go take a look around.

The thing that appeals to me right off is the smooth shiny tiles... just like dominos... which were always a big favorite in Texas where I grew up.
I own a set of really nice dominos, made in Texas, that are heavy for their size also. I like that for some reason.

Wow, really you can buy the set anywhere now, theirs even tournaments around the world where you win money.

Sure, I can probably buy the set, but I don't have anyone to play with. I don't do tournaments in anything, even something I'm good at.

YEAH! Mexican Train! My family plays that!

I'm not sure if I still have the 'station' or if my former wife has it... but I can always make a new one.

My family plays it fairly often, and I even have a computer program that we use to help keep score. A lot of people have different methods of playing and scoring. The way my family plays it, a hand must be a "cleared suit" and chows are not allowed. There are also a bunch of special hands too, such as Thirteen Grades.

We also have nicknames for some of the tiles. One Circle, for example, I called "Washing machine" when I was very little because it looked like a front end loader.

Wow, I didn't know there was a real life board version. I bet it's much more fun than any pc version. I really want a mah jong game now. Maybe I can get a toy shop to order it for me, I could always try that.

What's that?

That's a pity. It must have been disappointing.
I'm only a beginner so I need more coaching too. I used to go to a local club regularly where almost everyone else was an old gentleman. I like old ppl very much. They were excellent coaches, very patient and kind. I like the game but the fact that I'm not obsessed by it and I don't belong to the club anymore (I've moved) means now I only play when the fancy takes me.

I'm not registered and kind of like playing on my own now but if the fancy ever takes me yes.

This is what I play on, all on my own.

It's in Japanese but the direction is easy to follow, I think, just download it it's free. This is 9x9 meaning it's a smaller version. You can also have fun all by yourself by thinking of the next best move, you can find the quizes in lots of books/papers/magazines or on the Internet of course.

I found this to be a game that gets boring very quickly. I always lose interest after a few rounds.
