Good analogy

I used to have a problem calling people by first names when I was younger. However, I think it was, at least in part, a result of my feelings of inferiority from years of being bullied. In a sense, I did not feel worthy to call people by their first names. Now, I call virtually everyone by their first names, including the president of the college where I am a professor. (All faculty and administrators are on a first-name basis where I work.)

oops! correction

I have the opposite.

I dislike calling people by their nicknames because it's not their real name. Also don't like it if someone shortens my name. I have a habbit of saying someone's name first befor starting to speak to them - I guess it gets their attention and make me realise who I am speaking to.

Never thought of it before reading this thread. It explains why I some get agitated when I do the name thing before speaking to them...

I tend to address people as 'comrade' or 'citizen' x]

I dispensed with the name thing a while ago. As it is I'm changing mine to something different... o,...,o

I'm really bad with names because I need to see them written to remember them. I think people that liked to be called by their names should wear name badges.

No...I like using peoples first names to address them. Titles such as Mrs, Miss, Mr, Dr etc...they are all just so fake.

i am very careful of titles. If a person is a Dr., Professor, or Teacher, whatever, I will have to call them by their title followed by their first or last name (depending on how it sounds to me ;) ). I also call strangers Sir, and Ma'am.

I've always felt that a person took the time to acquire such title, he/she deserves the respect the title brings. Then again, I am a very class-based guy.

However, this does not apply to people I know like imediate family, and people my age who I occassionally speak to. I even call my parents by their first names. :?

My dad has that problem; he hasn't called my mom by her first name by... well, I don't know.
I actually have a hard time with that once they become my friend, it's not a deal when they're not, odd...

I rarely use any names. It's not really intentional, but at the same time names do seem kind of redundant if the person already knows I'm talking to him/her. "Hi" works just as well as "Hi [Name]". I guess it's just another piece of smalltalk that I've never really understood. I'm also terrible at remembering names, probably because I hardly ever use them.
