clarify here... my doctor said that if i were just a little bit worse he would diagnose me with LFA

So why didnt he just diagnosis you with classic autism in the first place, thats why i dont understand? Somebody said the difference between pddnos and other diagnosis''s is that pddnos you have "traits of autism" but not fit the whole criteria for autism itself. I've met kids though who have the diagnosis of pdd-nos but more severe then a low functioning autistic. Its weird.

i dont know... probably because doctors are just weird

Yeah, there's no consistency with the PDD-NOS label. I'm working with a kid right now who is labeled PDD-NOS, and I honestly would never have guessed that he is autistic. I would have suspected language problems, but I don't know enough about his history to suspect autism, and in the office, he doesn't seem too autistic. He's definitely milder than AS.

Thats also the problem with doctors... is they evaluate you in a weird white room... if they evaluated me in the house over the course of 24 hours i am sure i would be classic autism..

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Yea my little has pddnos label, she def has autistic traits, but def doesnt seem very autistic at all if that makes any sense. Doctors usually diagnosis a kid or adult with that if they dont fit the whole criteria, but it doesnt always make sense.

Yeah, I think to really diagnose someone who's very high-functioning you'd have to see them interacting in the community/classroom. Talking with friends/co-workers might also give some information.

I mentioned to my supervisor that I wouldn't have suspected autism, and she said one of the things that really makes him seem autistic is the lack of eye contact. Of course, given that I have poor eye contact myself (I am working on it with my therapist), it's not surprising that I didn't pick up on that. There's another high-functioning boy that I'm working with as well, but he's clearly autistic.
