neither do I. My eyes always close as soon as the flash goes off! And I hate forcing smiles. I take great photos while drunk though.

I'm always criticized for never smiling in a photo. When asked to smile, I give a "nonchalance" smirk.

In fact, I'm even criticized for my smirk. I always smirk.

No, I don't think they look alike at all.

I know several Aspie's in the real world and none of us look especially alike. The only exception I know of is my Dad and it's pretty obvious why we look similar :P.

I think there's something in the eyes. When I look at most pictures of aspies, I see something in their eyes that I see in my own. A spark, if you will. Something special. Like we all have this secret between each other. I see good things in the eyes of a lot of you guys, which is much more than I'd ever say for the average person I meet.

I'd definitely agree with Krista about the eyes thing, although I do feel that could be partly down to IQ. There's a similar spark in the eys of NTs I know with very high IQs, so maybe its related.

As for the facial similarity thing I think there's definitely something in it, but I'd say it might even go further than that. Maybe its just the aspie trait of noticing patterns more but I find I can group people together into certain personality traits most of the time depending on their facial features. I can see someone and usually tell from their face the type of person they are, and I'm very rarely wrong (almost never). The interesting thing is that NTs never seem to agree when I say that two people look similar, so I wonder if we notice traits that are more subtle and which fewer people pick up on. It might explain why people find it hard to state exactly what's similar about people with AS/autism.

I also believe the Victorians tried to make a science of this (phrenology I think they called it, but I could be wrong) and it was taken quite seriously at one point but later discarded as the methods were considered unscientific and the liberal movement towards the end of the 19th century didn't like the idea of discrimination based on sloping foreheads and heavy jaws etc.

I agree totally about the high IQ thing, I know exactly what you're talking about. As for personality assessments based on facial features, I agree also. I've always felt like I have this huge cache in my head full of faces and the personality traits that have been attached to them most often. I really think that because aspies may have a hard time assessing people in "normal" ways, we come up with very detailed and precise ways of doing it differently. I think we succeed.

Now, concerning auties as opposed to aspies, I have noticed that auties (low and mid functioning) look "stoned"--their eyes just look tired.
That's not the case in my elder brother, but it is in my twin.
But I see resemblances even between HFA and other levels.

All of the others that I've met have looked differant from each other. Also, eye contact varied from good to not so good, to seeming to stare past you in what I would surmise to be the 'autistic gaze'.

Behavior varied as well, from people I couldn't tell unless they said so, to people who were a little strange, to people who were quite strange.

Speech Pathohology ranged from relatively unaffected to somewhat affected, to greatly affected with no real continuum between those who's outward appearance and behaviour was quite affected by an ASD, to those who weren't noticeably affected by an ASD. --Some of the most 'normal' looking people had speach that was clearly impaired, whilst some ofthose who were noticeably 'autistic' had little to no speach impairment or affectation.

I'll third the eyes observation. The first time I saw one of Alex's videos, I recognized his eyes. The same with several of the pictures posted here. To me, there's an alertness, an analytical process, sometimes a dry - almost sardonic - humor, a bit of innocence, and a life force that's relaxed yet ready to rock and roll.

Or am I overanalyzing again?

Beauty isn't everything, though. :)

Not at all, that was pretty much exactly what I wanted to say but couldn't quite manage to spit out.
