Me.

But that might just be my upbringing with people always telling me that nothing I was doing was good enough.

I used to be worried about that when I was a kid, but then I realized it wasn't all that important.

I'm actually still only "perfectionist" about art.

I'm a total perfectionist with myself. It is actually debilitating because it becomes all or nothing.

I have OCD tendencies and I am a perfectionist. And I don't like it because I tend to think that everything can be always done much better so I often waste my time trying to improve that thing.

I am very much a perfectionist. When I write I compulsively make sure my spelling is perfect, seeing spelling errors makes me shudder and drives me up the wall. When something I do requires math I will check the answer several times. When I play SimCity I desire my cities to be designed in a ordered, rational way. When I play the strategy computer game Civilization with others I prefer Play-By-Email games because I have as much time to micromanage things as I want. Chaos is annoying to me and order is calming as aesthetically pleasing. Oddly, this perfectionism doesn't extend to cleaning my apartment. :?

I plan mine out, every last tile, before even starting them. I like to maximize land value and population density. They always follow a pattern.

In everything I've ever cared about, or will care about, I must be perfect. There just seems to be no other way.

Must get SimCity now :D I would love that! Is it like designing your own city?
Is it only a computer game?

Yes, it's a city-building simulation computer game.

Ebec,

You could take a look at any game made by Sid Meier. The man is a genious.

SimCity
SimAnt
Civilization
Transport Tycoon (a version of simcity but business related. Very fun)

And there were a few games released that 'linked' to Simcity .. in which you could use the cities you built as the location of the game.

SimCopter (rescue helicopter game takes place in the cities you built in SimCity)
The Sims (a game simulating .. simulated people. It's become popular with tweens because its like playing dolls online).

I've played guitar for 21 years yet I don't think I can paly a whole song all the way through (although I have done in the past). I know pretty much every thing there is to know about playing guitar yet never seem to get round to doing much playing as I spend all my time researching more info, as if I've got some sort of information anxiety. Not been diagnosed with aspergers but after seeing a T.V. program that touched upon it I did an online test according to which I'm about 30% autistic.

After reading up on it, it certainly explains a few things in my life like what I've mentioned above plus lack of eye contact, social isolation etc.

Is there any point in me getting diagnosed with it, I'm now aged 37?

Hello hunkychunk. Welcome to Wrong Planet! I personally see little point getting diagnosed at your age. There are those who would disagree. As you read threads here, you will find that this debate has been frequent. A lot depends on each individual and his situation. For example, some countries provide benefits if the disabilities are severe enough and you get through the process of convincing the agencies involved. If you do get diagnosed ("DX'd) you should be carefully consider the possible results of making it widely known. A few local "Google" searches on WP will reveal these debates.

Why don't you start a thread about your question?

I was just thinking of starting a post on this subject because I'm exactly the same. I was wondering how common that is with ASD because my report from the psychological assessment mentioned that I need help not getting caught up in the details.

I always need extensions with university too and I say I am struggling with my assessments but then I will get top marks. It's a bit embarassing but I really can't help it - it's perfect (or close to) or not at all. It just comes out the way it comes out.

I sort of decide whether it is the right moment for being a perfectionist or not. It wasnt always like that and it is hard to just let it go and stop thinking about things. Emailing every day has helped me on this, as I have to have a lot of short conversations with people due to my work. In the beginning I used about 30 minutes for 2 sentences.... Im still reconstructing my sentences more than normal, but Im getting better.
