Disorder is a state of entropy.

Never mind that Asperger's Syndrome is the accepted term within the medical and psychiatric communities, and disorder is not. Never mind that the DSM-V, slated for release in 2012, will almost certainly change it to Syndrome rather than Disorder. Never mind that the ICD-10 already uses syndrome rather than disorder. Never mind that every major researcher into AS, from Hans Asperger himself up to Baron-Cohen, Attwood, and many others have all maintained that it is NOT a disorder.

What agenda are you trying to push here? Are you asserting that Aspies are, in fact, inherently inferior to other people? Why insist on the more openly insulting terminology?

Gentleman, gentleman...semantics. Who cares what we are labeled? We know what we feel, and we know what we feel we are. Words are so pointless in expressing the human soul...

I don't particularly like the word syndrome but for me i would rather use that word then disorder as in my opinion it sounds a touch more negative but ret*d is just takin the piss.

Yes, semantics. The Lab Pet is autistic; 'ret*d?' with an IQ tested at 160 +

Often I've considered I'm so smart I'm ret*d. After all, it's not necessarily a negative term, and it surely fits. If I'm so smart, why are stupid people so much happier and better off than me?

I don't know. But my guess is that you simply are not designed for this NT world - incongruent. Is that a disorder or a syndrome?

And I only showed one hand in the vote; mea culpa.......I left fingerprints on the glass too :D

That's why I love CockneyRebel - Never afraid to be! I guess that's why we have this 'syndrome/disorder,' we're not afraid to be our own self. Never stop, Syd :D

I rather like "phenomenon." Too few medical anomalies are honored with this term.

1. a fact, occurrence, or circumstance observed or observable: to study the phenomena of nature.
2. something that is impressive or extraordinary.
3. a remarkable or exceptional person; prodigy; wonder.

Not to sound arrogant or anything...

If I had my druthers, I'd use "profile"-- not just for ASCs but really any sort of neurological condition (and by neurological I mean anything that involves the brain and can be seen as a pattern of traits). I'm not too big on pathologizing everything; that's not how evolution works. Either you live and breed, or you don't, titty boom.

So for me "profile" makes more scientific sense (despite that medicine, psychology, et al. rarely take an evolutionary perspective, silly gits  ).

However, I admit I use "condition" (hence the "ASC" up above: Autistic Spectrum Condition) because more people understand what I mean rather than "ASP" or Autistic Spectrum Profile. "Condition" saves time for me having to explain everything I've just explained in this post, which gets a bit tiring after awhile.

My thoughts on this.
Why is it called Asperger's Syndrome but ASD is Autistic Spectrum Disorder???????

Syndrome was the bad guy in The Incredibles...;)

and that's how I tell 'em apart...;)

Insert my dumb statement here: Yay!! ! Another Spike Jones Fan! I love his music!

And now what is pertinent to the topic: I prefer Syndrome; but if it is listed as a disorder, then okay...whatever. It doesn't matter - what matters is how one copes with it and learns to function as well as he and she can.
