Many perceive us as lazy because of our sensory problems and difficulty multitasking.

I also have an issue with willing my body to do something. I will sometimes just sit or stand for a minute in a partially catatonic state while I try to will my body to do something, though an outside sensory signal (like a phone ringing or a somebody telling me to do something) will immediately stop the catatonia. IIRC people with LFA have similar issues with willing their body to do something except it's more pronounced.

If this the same as simply sitting/standing still trying to figure out how you're going to do something that you already know how to do, only you can't right away because you have to plan it in your head first before you can execute it, only if someone reminds you to do something or have another outside signal you immediately remember how?

I refuse to do things that had long periods of misery attached to it, or things that are too challenging socially, and those things include school for example. Theres no way I could continue school, yet this doesnt make me a lazy person. I try my hardest with EVERYTHING I do, even when I went to college I got all As and Bs, but I just HAD to stop.. So yes, someones interpretation could have been that I was just being lazy, and maybe some people here are in the same situation and think that they are lazy, when in fact they just cant emotionally handle it.

I know exactly how that is. The internet simply has too much information regarding my areas of interest. It's the perfect substitute for not having the money to actually build physical concepts related to these interests... and thus extremely addictive due to its accessability.

I have the same problem if given access to a library plus a large amount of free time. Too bad life is so short; I would love nothing more than to be able to freeze time for a few hundred thousand years and not age or need physical sustinence and simply spend it reading, drawing, and building things. Too many ideas, too little time to ever explore them all.

Discipline? I have very good discipline in very narrow ways, and lack it elsewise. This has always been a problem.

I already know what I'm going to do and it's planned in my head, it's actually doing it that's the problem.

Hyperactivity and its opposite are both involved in ASDs. In addition, an inability to care for things outside of one's interest adds to the appearance of being "lazy".

I think laziness is common in many people, NTs too. I think it is because humanity evolved in extreme conditions for most part and survival pressures propelled us into action. Now, without the need to hunt or the need to run away from the hungry lion, our bodies, designed for a physically active life outdoors, will become lazy.

I have been called very motivated and hard working by some and lazy by others.

If I rub off as lazy, it's likely because it's either a social situation I don't want to deal with (for example, I have been told I am lazy because I fail to attend social events) or because I am thinking too hard about something.

Of course, I can also classified as "hard working". Anyone who has watched me write a 15 page paper in two hours knows this. In addition, I tend to be persistent and driven while attempting to improve something. When I was learning how to drive, I would insist on trying out every single type of road in every situation with every obstacle imaginable so that I could beat my friends (who are a few months younger than me) to getting a license (which I did on the first try). Once I got the license, I wanted to learn every road in a new area and forced myself to try a new route every other day to do so. Today, I know almost every street in the entire region (and have a clean driving record).

I think it's all selective about laziness and also as to what we think is important. I never felt riding a two-wheeler was relevant until I moved to a community where walking would no longer get me from my home to point B in a reasonable amount of time. Never had any desire to learn how to ride it until then, and after three weeks I was riding as if I had my whole life!

Laziness isn't a trait itself...something has to cause the apparent laziness. Whether it be lack of motivation, depression, executive dysfunction etc. I can see those being a problem for those with AS sometimes...but laziness isn't a specific trait of having AS.

A lot of people off the spectrum are lazy...and a lot on the spectrum are lazy. Over-all, I just think it's a human behavior that we all exhibit from time to time.

Me too - I just seem to chill out better that way (TV/ Computer) but I can go into a trance too, thinking about things. Lazy? More uninvolved with physical reality I'd say (active mind/ underactive body).

Sometimes I "zone out" and don't talk or really move around much, but it's because I'm hyperfocusing on something and don't want to turn my attention elsewhere. Other people might think I'm being lazy, but that's just their perception. My mind is never lazy.

I have difficulty with my energy expenditures...it can often take alot more time and effort for me to complete simple tasks...especially those that I have to do but cannot hyperfocus on...Because my mind is constantly switching channels....making the distance between point a and b a long and twisted maze....This contributes to fatigue...or a sense of overwhealmedness which leads to inertia....which leads to procrastinating....which could be interpreted as laziness..

Yeah, that's right... inertia is an autistic / Asperger's trait (I have that myself), but it's not the same as laziness, although it can look like that...

As for me, I thought for a long time that I was just extremely lazy, until I got an Asperger's diagnosis and found out that my "laziness" was just plain old aspie inertia... 8O :D
