I often find that I have made a fist and tucked my thumbs into the center.I did work with an autistic guy who often had his hands tucked in against his chest and also flapped but I dont believe he was tucking to avoid flapping as he appeared to have no self consciousness in flapping.

Personaly theory...perhaps these type of body positions are actually to give more sensory data to where are body parts are in space.I tend to like body positions that other people might regaurd as "stress positions" and also have a problem with feeling like I am actually "IN" my body(depersonilization?).I think this is purely physiological in nature even if the psychs would like to inturpret all physical movement on their own understanding of non-verbal communication."Hey DR.I am not trying to communicate to you or others but to myself"

I curl my hands up, but not backwards! ...eeeesh...you double-jointed people scare me.

I curl my hands, toes, and also have a habit of curling my arm up towards my head so my hand is gripping the back of my neck.

Those aren't double joints, just flexible ones. I have double-jointed thumbs but unlike my fingers I can't bend them back, proably because I didn't fidget with them so much.

Yeah, I do. But I don't really know what to say about it.

As some members have said (thanks for all of your input everyone): I do it when overwhelmed, whether sensory or emotionally. I know I exhibited it in high school for I was teased for doing such (I was overwhelmed a lot in high school).

Here's a picture of it:

I notice I do it as soon as I feel my arm and hand crook itself, but I'm usually too far gone to care how I appear; I noticed today that if I sit down when I do this I begin to rock. I have control over how overtly I rock, but I cannot control the rocking itself, i.e., I'll always rock to some extent, no matter how minute.

i like to hold my hand in this same stretch, except that the whole knife side (pinky-side) of my hand touches my wrist... basically all of my pinky and same-side of hand... it's disgusting... ill try and take a pic of it when i'm home

Hand in Hand topic

Exactly. When I stand and my hands are at my sides they curl When they sit in my lap they curl

I would like to know what goes in in my brain that is making this happen.(':duh:')

I catch myself doing it every now and then. Sometimes though I'll just rest my head on my hands while sitting if I'm at a table, otherwise I'll just curl up my hand to my chest. I tend to crook my hand though when it is in the air.

I dont usually curl up my hands, but i find myself wringing them a lot when i am uncomfortable in situations. I also flick the ends of my hair. sometimes against my cheek or my forehead. That, i have done as long as i can remember.

As I read the OP I looked down, and there was my left hand in my lap curled up against my body. Except when I do it it is very much more turned in to where my fingers are touching the part of my palm where it meets the wrists. Guess that I never noticed it before. I'm very uncomfortable with my arms just hanging out in open space. They're always close to my body. My ASD son is the same way. This is how he typically holds his arms:

serenity, cute kid you have there; I have a picture of me at a similar age dressed as Spiderman (I wore the suit everywhere my mother told me, shopping and all).

How he's holding his hand is exactly the same as I do when I stand.

Mostly, I always find that I have my hands straight against my sides with my fists clenched, especially when I'm walking; other times my left hand will be curled against my chest as this thread pertains to. My right usually hangs by my side and balled up.

When I sit I usually have my left hand covering half of my face, and my right hanging by its thread and balled or curled up.

krex, good theory there.

Sorry didn't read this tread until now.

Oh Bloody hell, yes I do! Not often nowadays but I remember having a horrendous time with kids teasing me at school, I would get anxious and curl my hand against myself and the other kids would mimic it to frustrate me even more.

I do that a lot when i'm scared/Nervus!!
When I go to docters or dentists and even when i'm thinking about things that make me nervus and worried.

It's like I'll curl my hand in a way that i'm trying to grab the end of my long sleved shirt. It's like your picture but the hand part is much more curled into it's self. I do this with both of my hands and I'll tilt my head down and bring then up to my face.

when ever i'm alone and walking about in my house, I'll hold my arms and hands the same way that Mr.Burns (From the Simpsons) does. It just feels comfortable to put them in that position. But I try not to do it in public!

I do that too, it causes me to get "what are you thinking about so hard?" comments.

Not a flapper, but definitely curl my hands up as if there should be a big old flagpole in the middle of them quite often. I look pretty normal until you see my hands like this.

People just blame it on the fact that I use the computer so much and think my wrists got that way over time from typing/using the mouse too much. If only they knew. (I don't tell others about my condition except for doctors).
