Some people just love to piss others off and get a reaction - some especially love to get the sort of reaction Stern gets because they think it makes them clever/independent/above it all/some kind of hero to say the things most people don't say, even if they're untrue. (And some people believe that if enough people are against something, it must be true.) It's usually not because they "lack the social skills to get noticed any other way." They don't think the other kinds of notice are worth getting.

It isn't easy to pinpoint the "wrong" thing to say in any given situation, any more than it's easy to pinpoint the "right" thing to say.

Women say they hate Howard Stern because he treats women like sex objects by constantly asking them vulgar questions and trying to persuade them to get naked on his show....yet he seems to have NO TROUBLE finding hot women to be his guests.

So? Women aren't all the same person with the same opinions. And people always seem to think they're the exception - maybe they all think the other women have been objectified or demeaned but they won't be, or that they're tougher than other women. And some people think that all exposure is good for their careers.

Why "say they hate" and not just "hate"? I'm willing to believe that many people do in fact despise him.

I listened to Howard Stern for years and it never occurred to me that he could have AS, I find the idea unlikely, but possible. He does talk quite a bit about what a social idiot he is when he's away from the microphone, and how the person he is on-air is just a persona. He also has interests that he's obsessive and knows everything about. And all his OCD stuff. I used to work in the building where he lives, and whenever I saw him, he was always very quiet and walked quickly without making eye contact with anyone, but that could be just because he didn't want fans bothering him.

I idolize him because to me he's basically The Dork who made it big in entertainment. But I hear A LOT of women hating on him and calling him names(OFF the air of course :P). I wish he would go into politcs someday, maybe even run for Prez  .

His social skills aren't typical (normal). Yes, he is fairly well spoken and can appear to be normal at times but he has some obvious quirks. He doesn't make eye contact. He uses sunglasses to hide that. It may appear to be for his image but the shades help to hide where your eyes are really looking and prevents others from looking into yours. If you see him in close proximity to another person, he's incredibly awkward; at a distance (while a guest is on the couch away from him), he's not. He does have some compulsive behaviors but he seems to laugh them off. Also bear in mind that in radio that he doesn't have to look at his audience (which bypasses the social fear as he's essentially talking to a microphone, not to people).

I wouldn't say he is or he isn't but it's certainly plausible.

I LOVE Howard Stern- he makes me proud to be half Jewish!

Yeah, I could definitely see him being a fellow Aspie. Aw, yer offended by all that? Yeah see, with me, almost NOTHING is sacred. My g/f is a tad religious( not very, mind you- nor does she mind that I'm NOT), and I pulled out a TON of "Yo mama" jokes- ALL sacriligious, and she laughed her ass off. With me, virtually ANYTHING is fair game. The ONLY thing that I consider going too far is telling someone their family member is dead; THAT is going too far. Otherwise, I get a really sick kick out of almost anything else. My former co-worker and I used to come up with sick pranks we could pull( but never actually got to doing it): one of my favorites was the idea of going to a synagogue and asking the directions to the nearest neo-Nazi rally.

Folks, I ain' kiddin' ya! Again, I see a LOT of him in us, and I see a lot of what he does in ME! Granted, it could just be the fact that he and I are mentally very "sick" individuals, but that's BESIDES the point :D

I've always thought, whenever I happened to see the Howard Stern show for a couple of minutes -- I can't stand to watch it too long-- That I would dread having to be on his show...

All the comments and questions he would quickly whisk my way, I would have no way to respond to quickly and might not even understand half of what he was implying, you know? Everything out of my mouth would sound like..... "Huh? uuhhh... what? uuuuuhh, I don't know.... what do you mean?"

Then he would embarrass me suddenly and ask "Have you ever slept with another woman"? He always asks women that question.. almost EVERY time I think that I've observed.. and like I say, I've only watched his show for a few moments at a time.. I would be stunned and not want to talk about my personal sex life and being on the spectrum, I would NOT have a quick come-back to protect myself from the onslaught against my privacy.. I would probably start to feel irritated by him and want to punch him ;) meltdown? possibly... and if it's a live show, well.. ha.. that would be even MORE embarrassing... He would make me look like a real fool, I know it.. I would NEVER want to be on his show or any other show like that.. he would grill me...

I'm a woman and I love his show. I got Sirius satellite radio just to hear his show - which is much more interesting on satellite radio.

His radio persona and his off-air personality are two different things. His style of pushing limits is very calculated and not for want of knowing the social rules. He is very aware of social norms and has made his fortune on pushing the limits in radio. Not just the social limits, but the artistic limits, as well. I don't know if he is Aspie or not, but he is very aware of what he is doing. He lives a quiet personal life and has a long, happy relationship with his fiancee.

Howard Stern was not drummed off of terrestrial radio, BTW. He was actually offered huge $$$ to stay, but chose to move to satellite, where the FCC would not be hounding and constraining his creative efforts. The show is much more creative and fun on satellite and to judge it from excerpts on "E!" or by what was on years ago is to judge only a small portion of the most "outlandish" parts of the entire show.
