Seattle is fantastic.

I lived there for 20 years during the grunge and the Microsoft boom. Seattle is a city filled with opportunity, jobs and lots of open minded people, many of whom have made good specifically because of their unique ways of thinking. Seattle's general culture values uniqueness and quirks. Lots of creative new businesses, (and some creative older businesses,) especially in the tech area. And it's easy to stay healthy there, which is a plus.

Seattle is a unique city, as well, in that it's desirable to live in the city itself. There are many single people and there are lots of great housing situations for singles. IMO this city is where "Geek Chic" was born.

Now I live in New York and it's true that there are "all kinds" here. But NYC can't hold a candle to Seattle in terms of quality of life. IMO, of course. If I could, I'd go back to Seattle in a heartbeat. I would love my kids to grow up in a culture that encourages and rewards individuality.

I don't think i could live in a big city, too much noise and too many people. Little southern towns are not good to go unnoticed in but then again not everyone wants to go unnoticed. I live in a tiny town in alabama, i can drive north for ten minutes and be in tennessee, west for twenty minutes and be in mississippi. One advantage is that people get to know you and generally don't care if you act strange, if you see the same people everyday at the gas station you get more comfortable with them, that makes it somewhat easier for me. There is plenty of nature as well.

On the downside you have to deal with people that are convinced that if obama wins the presidential election he will enslave every white citizen and force everyone to convert to islam. It is a give take type of thing. :?

I used to live in Houston and I loved it there. I go back to visit Houston every year or two, and every time I visit, everyone's always extremely nice to me.

I've also lived in Indianapolis (I'm nearby there currently). As for Indy, it all depends on where you live. I'd definitely not reccomend the east side to anyone. The north and south sides are great though! Oh, and don't even bother with the west. lol I guess it's sort of like 'The Wizard of Oz' here!

Pittsburgh

 There are some really strange things in Pittsburgh...being an Aspie is the least of them.

I hate cities the burgh is no exception, but I can say that it's one I've never really felt so "out-of-place" in as I have in others.

Well I'm surprised and glad to see the answers. Well I currently live in Houston, and let me say, my treatment here sucks, and people here are too ignorant to people with AS symptoms or anything of the sort. It surely isn't a great place for me and it's hard to get a good network of friends here, even though I have AS it's really more than that.

I have to say Toronto is a better city for people like us, I visited there once and I have lots of family up there and the people are so friendly to me over there and they all seem they all want to be my friend when I was there. Heck I would love to move there.

^Exactly.

The South is a bad place for Aspies overall. That's why most of the cities I listed as "worst cities for Aspies" are all Southern cities.

However most of the cities I listed for "best cities" are either a) Canadian cities, and b) West Coast or Northern cities. Why is that?

My guess it's because of the South's conservatism. More liberal areas are more tolerant of differences and are for more likely to have more concern about quality of life.

I see. Thanks. I kinda knew this all along.

I think Aspies in liberal towns like Toronto or San Fran tend to have it better than those who grew up in the South. Don't ya think?

I was literally persecuted in a little southern town... set up, jailed, humiliated, completely used by someone I cared greatly for and laughed at by alot of people.. I found out later that they were all laughing and talking behind my back.. I would love to visit Toronto, but I can never even be a citizen of Canada even if I tried, because I was set up to get a DUI..and legally railroaded in a small southern town, just like what happens in some movies I've seen. My record is permanently destroyed unless I can get it somehow expunged. The officer that pulled me over admitted in court that she never saw me swerve not once!! ! and I was 5 miles out of her jurisdiction.. Her police report was a total lie!! It was all based upon a phone call she received from a bar-owner's wife who slipped a shot into my drink.. I found out later that the bar-owner's wife at that bar I had gone to, in order to play a song on the guitar and sing for open mic night, ended up being a FRIEND of that person that used me and purposely broke my heart for a year... they all made fun of me, I thought she was being nice by offering me a beer, ha... I'm so dumb..

She quickly closed the club right after giving me that drink and she suddenly yelled at me outside. Soon thereafter, I was pulled over and utterly humiliated by a sadistic cop that again, NEVER saw me swerve ever... The legal limit used to be .10, but they changed it to .08 . I blew .09... My license was destroyed and honestly, I truly want to emigrate to another country because of what happened to me in the South.. it pretty much destroyed my life, unless I can get into Australia or Canada or some other country that will allow me in with the DUI... I hate NC now. I really feel that I was unfairly persecuted because of my disability... I wish there was some way to get a fair trial or get my record sealed/expunged so I could emigrate to another country sometime in the future... If there was a city in the U.S. that would treat a person with NLD/asperger's fairly and accept them, then I'd like to seriously consider moving there for a while... otherwise, maybe there's someplace in another country that would accept me..

Ah that sucks.

Well more evidence the South is a bad place for Aspies.

Melbourne Australia is pretty good for my son at least - but cold at times. I grew up in Brisbane, if it hasn't changed since I was living there, I would imagine it would be a bit too *redneck* (is that the word?) for my son. Where the slightest difference meant being bullied - adults and kids alike. I'm sure it's very different now as it is becoming more culturally diverse and hopefully more tolerant of others who are just slightly quirky or happen to come from somewhere else.

As for resources for Aspie kids - Melbourne is ace :D

Brisbane hasn't changed from what I understand. Queensland's general commitment to mental health is the worst in Australia.

For resources for kids - yes, Melbourne (where I grew up) is probably a winner. Across the board though from what I understand Canberra may be out in front. Adults on the Spectrum get ignored though.

Mind you - if I have anything to do with it, Australia will be the best country in the world for ASD people!
