at fifty-one me;
what missed opportunities could you possibly have in mind????

I was 12 when I was diagnosed and I hated it. It meant I had something and was truly different.

I self-diagnosed at 45. If my mom had known what I now know at 55, I would have been diagnosed at 5 or sooner. I was one pain-in-the-butt child. I have a niece who is a mini-me. But she is doing better because she is home-schooled and therefore has never gone through the bullying I did.

Diagnosis was about one month before my 19th birthday. It didn't catch me by surprise because I had strongly suspected it before. And had tried to find a diagnostician based on that.

I was puzzled mostly. I figured I must be a hard to detect case. After the diagnostician declared they had everything they needed, I asked 'well do I have AS now or not?'. Since nobody bothered to tell me explicitly and I wasn't sure. Their answer was an astonished 'well, yes, of course. why are ye asking??'.

Actually, I felt a lot better knowing that there was a reason for what I was going through, that it wasn't just me, I wasn't crazy, etc.

My son felt the same way, and we did, too, when he was diagnosed.

The first two diagnoses (physician and Ph.D. psychologist) at age 21; the last one (psychiatrist) at age 22.
All diagnoses were Asperger's Syndrome.

i was diagnosed at 10.
wasnt told until i was almost 12 yrs old.
It was so frustrating i wish i was told straight away.

when i was told i had AS i didnt really know what it was, i didnt realy understand. so i didnt really know how i felt. i guess oin the end i felt relieved, i knew why i was different.

xx

I was diagnosed at age 8. My psychiatrist told me himself!
But I never understood what "Autism" or "Asperger's Syndrome" meant until a couple of years ago, when I really started to study it. And then I was like, "OF COURSE!"

My mom is in denial about the fact that I have AS. Even though I was diagnosed, and it's on all of my school IEP paperwork, AND I show all of the
characteristics of the "disorder", she still won't believe it.
She thinks it's all a load of b.s. and that I'm just another wierd kid.

"Well gee, mom. What do you think it is that makes me wierd? Hmmm?"

Someone suggested that I had autism when I was 3 or 4, but I wasn't dxed with it.
I was officially dxed with AS when I was 7.

Diagnosed at 25 with AS.

I "discovered" the autism spectrum when I was 22, almost 23. Self-dxed awhile after that. Got an AS assessment at a local autism center when I was 23, almost 24, but that wasn't an official diagnosis. I then took those assessment papers to a psychologist (my mother came along for interview), and got diagnosed this last March, 2007. In total, it took more than 2 1/2 years to get diagnosed.

In the meantime, I ran into a lot of inexperienced diagnosticians who said I wasn't AS (one psychiatrist doing his residency, a child psychologist, a therapist with expertise in Personality Disorders, and a social worker). Thankfully, I'm stubborn and believed they were wrong due to inexperience. So I finally went to an autism center and they assessed me, interviewed my mother, and agreed I was AS. As did the psychologist later on.

13.

This was the mid-90s or it would have probably been sooner. My mom always swore I was "not right" but the teachers just thought she needed to spank me more or something
