I saw another new term (to me) today called Broader Autistic Phenotype! apparently its an even bigger "umbrella" type to cover people who only have one or two autistic traits.

BAP is a very high functioning, unimpaired area of ASD,it's more like [what danielismyname has said-] the autistic personality than with the impairments of the specific ASDs.

Good find. Thanks for that.

I wonder if I had been diagnosed in the 1950s with the old criteria if I would have made it to neurotypical and had shyness or somthing else attached to it as in Shy NT or Mute NT even.

The old criteria were: one needed a profound lack of affective contact up to age 5, and elaborate repetitive routines. In other words, the aloof child who flaps/rocks a lot, and really hates change.

Researchers have applied Kanner's criteria to individuals with ASDs now, and they found that the prevalence was similar to how it was back then.

O, and naturally, everyone with Asperger's was missed, whether they had a delay in speech or not; we've always been here, we just haven't been popular.

I was just born at the wrong time then, if I had been born years earlier I would have been NT all my life :D

I find the discussions about names and criteria for various labels most interesing.

Thanks for clarifying.
