I've always had a gift for imitating accents.
It's probably connected to AS by the ability
to focus on detail.I do it by by concentrating
on how individual letters and combinations of
them are pronounced, rather than simply trying to change my whole way of speaking.
Paradoxically,I think my natural voice can sound a bit monotonous.

It kind of sucks when people think you are making fun of them, when it is just echolalia manifesting itself involuntarily.
It doesn't happen to me much anymore though.

I can turn it on, and turn it off. I tend to be pretty careful, because of the way businesses are nowadays, you can get into trouble doing the wrong accent at the wrong time...

My friend is annoyed by my Kanye west impression because he has a chicago accent and he thinks I'm making fun of him.

I find myself using a different voice all the time. When I was younger I had a PeeWee style with an Australian accent. I've been called a female version of Robin Williams, although I am not as animated as him. Sometimes I dont even remember what my "normal" voice is.

I get different accents sometimes. A friend at school remarked how I got this weird accent when speaking in front of the whole class. I never noticed it myself, and it's weird because it was an accent that I had no kind of connection with as far as I know. I'm clueless about from where I've taken it.

My family are always telling me not to mimic the accents of the take away people when I am on the 'phone placing an order. I can't help it, I don't know why. Its not too obvious though and it happens for a short time after I put the phone down. Worse is when I do it in direct contact situations. Its not as bad as it used to be now I am more aware of it.

Bah, bad Kaleido :(

I can copy almost to perfection sometimes the voices of films, people, cartoons, etc. Generally I can control when I take on the tone, accent, voice of someone else, but on occassion I'll forget or not notice and slip into something. Normally I go into Alan Cumming's German accent from Cabaret when I need to calm down or I'm excited or bored. Glad I'm not the only of out there!!

Im new to the whole AS thing. It makes me feel so much better that I am not the only one who does this. When I am talking to someone I pick up their accent, speed of speech and voice patterns. I can copy almost exactly voices that I hear. I always have to make an effort to stop myself from sounding like the person Im talking to so that they will not think Im making fun of them

You and me both, buddy. I wasn't sure I had it until an AS friend started listing things that she and I both knew I do.

So, guys, is this an AS trait, or just an odd ability?
