I finger chromatic scales on Euphonium occasionally. Actually, I was doing that while reading this thread. Sometimes I'll finger "Carnival of Venice."

Liverbird said it quite well.

I have a collection of "small stims" I can use in public situations where I am overwhelmed by something. An example is from the other night while I was at dinner with my husband. The waitress fumbled to the point of idiocy with some silverware as she was setting our table haphazardly. Metal is a HUGE sensory problem for me, and hearing it scrape and clatter together incessantly is enough to make me want to bang my head on something. I squeezed my leg under the table, focusing purely on the sensation of the squeezing, until she finally left. It felt like forever. I almost had to tell her to stop...I was *thisclose*.

I prefer the term, "repetitive motor mannerisms". My favorite is to repetitively go through with the motions of tactical/speed reloads of a "phantom" pistol (pistol shooting was an obsession of mine); this is probably more of an autistic disorder thingy, i.e., motor mannerisms in relation to an interest.

Anyone with AS do something similar with their interest, perhaps playing a "phantom" musical instrument or something?

When I have to take a test, sometimes I "draw my pencil" and hold it forward like a drawn saber and "charge" towards the test room.
