When I was younger my butt long hair would get knotty. When I learnt to take care of it, the new problem was frizz. Now that its much shorter, the problem is oily roots :? I have problems no matter the length..

I never suited short hair, and my long hair used to just look lank and tangle, so for me the answer was DREADLOCKS! Embrace the tangles!

That was 6 years ago, I still love my dreads, they're fairly low-maintenance at this age, and I suit them a lot more than I suited conventional 'hair' :D

Don't cut it! You'll regret it!

I have been going back and forth for years- cutting, growing out, cutting, growing out. I like my hair extra short- has to be really short cuz I can't stand it on my neck or in my face and I like it shoulder-length or longer. I have to be able to pull it off my face- can't stand tickly hairs. I'm growing it out again now and it's just past my shoulders finally. I don't want toe ver cut it short again.

My tips for long hair and how to avoid tangles:

1. get a good conditioner. curly? try www.curls.biz I use their kids lines on my 3 adopted children. My 4 y/o African American daughter has ultra curly hair and it works wonders on her. It's also great on the loose waves on the baby.

2. If it's curly, don't wash every day. A rinse is all it needs- if that. Mine is straight and fine and I have to wash it every day or it gets oily.

3. Braid it at night. This is the #1 solution for tangles I found. If you shower the night before it makes for nice waves in the hair too once you take the braid out. I braid my 9 y/o's hair for her at night since it's now 1/2 way down her back. I braid my hubby's hair too as his is almost that long too.

4. Be sure to get regular trims to keep the ends healthy. Every 2 months would be good- just 1/4" trim is all you need. Bad ends=tangles.

5. Do a hot oil treatment ever other week to keep it healthy and moisturized.

6. When using rubber bands and other hair accessories, make sure that they are soft on your hair and not grabbing and ripping it out when you take them out. Scrunchies are great.
