Here's a few things that help to get me by:

- When someone acknowledges you, smile and acknowledge them back. Saying 'hi' first doesn't hurt, if you have the courage to do that.

- Watch a bit of TV, preferably the popular shows, even if you wouldn't normally watch them. It gives you something to talk about.

- Don't talk about things such as decomposing bodies, disembowelment etc. to anyone but your closest friends, fascinating though they may be.

- Don't go on about one thing. Telling when the other person or people is/are bored is the key. If they start looking away or looking at their watch, going 'hmmm' all the time or tapping their feet, they are probably bored. You have to try and compose a mental list of things that you could talk about, so that you don't just stay on one topic until the following Christmas.

Ued to carry a YoYo in my bag as a replacement stim. Of course, at forty, it didn't do anything to dispel notions that I was an oddball. :bball:

As I mentioned in the TV thread - watch reality tv! The important interactions are repeated a few times for advertising purposes, and then you get 'diary-cam' of the person explaining their feelings and intentions - an NT data-mine!

I prefer to dress a little quirky to lower people's expectation of my normalcy, it at least makes me less nervous.

If unsure, be over-polite rather than risking being rude - if people think you're a shy 'sweetie' rather than a clueless weirdo, they let you away with anything.
