Somebody from New York. Is it great to live there?

I was born in new york city 8)

The question in new york city is not how great it is to live there, but how affordable it is to live there.

queens and manhattan are great place to live, but stay away from the bronx unless you have a death wish and be careful of people selling you stuff on the street.

Rats and Bums and Junkies, Oh My!

Follow the urine-stained roads...

We're off to see the litter - the dirty ol' litter and smog

The three-card Monte, muggers and whores and subway cars to ride on...

I'll enjoy NYC on the television screen, thanks, where there's no smell-o-vision and the sound can be muted...

NEW YORK

If I entwined my hair with flashing light,
Inscribed my forehead bright with fire red
Diagrams of curves and clouds to bring to sight
The cavorting shapes moving in my head;
If I dyed my ears blue, drew a banana on my nose,
Placed between my lips a round glass eye,
Hung each armpit with a yellow rose,
Strung glass bells inside my thigh
To titillate my genitals and tinkle
On arousal, wound ribbons out of gold
Around my calves to curl and crinkle
As I strolled into the subway crowd, bold
In all my manic glory, perhaps a face or two
Might glance my way, dismiss this clown
And return to puzzle out the clue
For ten across, maybe six down.

I used to frequent NYC in the 80s and 90s. I had friends and family there. For a long time, I hated it because there are so many people, loud noises, and smells, and not many plants or animals. My relatives lived by Central Park, and it was nice to go for walks there, but back then, it was full of bums and trash - the scary kind of trash.

When I was in high school and started to go for long walks around the city, I started to love it. I got used to the crowds. There's a kind of urban beauty that I really appreciate, and people watching is fun too. In NY, everyone people-watches.

I almost moved there in the fall of 2000. I could have rented a place near Coney Island for $300/month. But I stayed in Maine because I had fallen in love. Now I think that was kind of silly.

New York City is *very* expensive, and much of Manhattan has this odd odor- I've never figured out what it is. The subways are smelly and poorly ventilated (when my friend from Romania visited, her reaction was "We have better subways in Eastern Europe!"). In short, it's a large city.

Aside from those things though, New York is a pretty neat place. So many different kinds of people from so many different countries live there. You can also find pretty much anything you want. Lots of museums also, and there are some pretty areas. I like New York.

The northern Bronx is actually very nice- much nicer than northern Manhattan. There are also some decent areas in the central Bronx. It's really the south Bronx you need to be wary of.

You didn't mention Brooklyn- many areas of Brooklyn are good places to live as well.

I don't know about Staten Island- I've never been there.

The ferry ride to Staten Island from Manhattan is free (or was back in 2000) and is a great ride. The ferry leaves from the Battery at the bottom edge of Manhattan. I used to swim in the pool in St.George back when I was a kid living in Bay Ridge. In those days there was a ferry from 69th street in Brooklyn.

been there a few times. It was hectic getting from the airport to the Upper West Side, having to ride the subway (Tube to our brothers and sisters across the pond...;). Managed to see the first floor of the WTC (90-minute wait...kinda regret not doing it after all..) Statue of Liberty is a half-day series of standing and floating lines (from getting on, going over, going up, down, and back...;) It's kind of fast-paced, and the people can be rude or freindly, depending. There's actually a monastery at the north end of the Island (the Cloisters), if you need a peaceful setting.

Worth a visit, but hardly anyone who's not dirt poor or fabulously wealthy can actually live there now.

I lived in NYC for 5 years and I hated it. It's noisy, dirty, smelly and full of people all over the place. I couldn't wait to leave. Of course now that I've left I can't help getting nostalgic once in a while - becaues after all, there really is no place like NYC...

I grew up in New York. If you want to struggle through a summary of that time see my blog at http://sandfile.blogspot.com/

I used to shop at the Sears in South Bronx. I'm white. No problems. I also had some black friends in Harlem and never had any problems on my visits.
