What is the difference between Sympathy and Empathy?

What a confusing topic. I realized the other day that I've never understood the difference in the 2, so my NT friend and my husband were trying to help me with it. I'm still lost.

From the dictionary

empathy: the ability to identify oneself mentally with a person or thing and so understand his or her feelings.

sympathy: 1. sharing another person's emotions. 2. a feeling of pity or tenderness towards one suffering pain, grief or trouble. 3. liking for each other produced in people who have similar opinions or tastes.

compassion: a feeling or pity that makes one want to help or show mercy.

Yes sadly no matter what I do all my sculptures and srtwork turn out creepy . . . :(
