I get the same nervous sensation when walking past security guards or police officers.

I'm aware they're looking at me and reading me and this makes me nervous and very self aware.

And yes, cameras are on you its true (£1.18 for petrol, £1.27 for diesel) but if you mean people, I get worried about that to, I don't like getting up in front of anyone, its scary and strange. I mean that feeling of standing up in class or going to the buffet in a restaurant. The way you have to think about it is you are the least important thing on their minds, they care about food and getting out their as soon as possible.
in finland its 1.50/litre/gallon

I'm not sure.

I don't go to the gas station. My husband gasses the car up so I don't have to because for some reason I'm very nervous doing it. I avoid it. If I need to go somewhere and the car needs gas, I won't go unless my husband is available to gas it up.

BUT, I also don't like to go to stores by myself or anything else. /shrug I do it when I absolutely have to, but otherwise.. I'm not a girl that likes to shop at all.

In Switzerland you pick a pump, fill your tank, then walk into the shop and tell the cashier which pump you used, and pay.

Odd, I've driven a Ferrari to a petrol station fully expecting stares, and everyone ignored it ! !!

In the USA at some places, you can pump first and then pay after you're done. But because of that, people can pump and then drive off.

Having pre-pay prevents pump and runs.

If America kept gas prices the same, but changed it so we get like 20 times as much profit from gas (except just getting money from gas taxes), we'd have enough money to build mass transit systems on par with Tokyo in every US city with a population over a million. That'd be badass!

My car's like that, too =)

One time I ran out of gas on the way home from work, because I refused to go to three other gas stations...I had to go to the one I was comfortable with :x

I was like 30 feet away from it, too! But I was afraid to get out and push, because I thought I'd get hit or something.

I hate the gas station too, although I am nervous about doing alot of things by myself. Never really knew why, it's not like I don't know how to do it for crying out loud... But I always feel at the gas station like everyone is staring at me. I feel like everyone that drives by is staring and think I'm a freak or something! Seems kinda silly but it is the truth...lol

But why not nervous of everything else?

What came to mind after I read your post was this...

Could it be that you are in a vulnerable position at that time?
I mean... you are stopped at this gas station, your car is turned off and hooked up to the hose from the gas pump, you are standing out in the wide open area of the gas station, and strange people are coming and going.

You don't get to choose who these people are, as in, when you go to a certain store or a certain part of a town, or a certain building, sometimes you know the kind of people or maybe the actual people you are going to encounter.
At a gas station, people from all walks of life will drop in there.

There may also be that expectation of needing to hurry up and leave because someone might be waiting on your pump.

Also, from my own ignorance, I have always felt like Florida has quite a bit of random violence on the roads, so the gas stations could be like an extension of that fear to me perhaps.
I have never been to Florida so like I said, my ignorance is showing here.

$3.82...heaven knows what they're paying in Europe...;)

It's currently about $7/gallon in Switzerland, and you know what? Germans come over the border to fuel up because it's cheaper here! :o

Us Dutch go over the border into Germany to fill up our cars.
The current average price with usually a fair bit of discount is 1,55 euro per 1 litre wich is about 2,35 dollar.
This would translate into about 9-10 dollar per gallon over here.
When i got my lisence about 1.5 years ago it was about 1,23 euro for 1 litre.
With the gas prices going up the taxes on them automaticly go up with that seeing as about 70% of the price is taxes.
We currently have the 4th highest gas prices in the world over here.
Needless to say i go to work by public transport, as otherwise because it would cost be double that if i went by car.

Nowadays i often think about selling my car.
When it reaches 2 euro per litre i wil proberbly end up doing it.
By looking at the current pace of how the price is rising i'd give it another 1 maybe 1 and a half year.

Aniway on topic don't you have any unmanned gas stations over there ?
Here with the murdering competition due to the insane prices they've been popping up everywhere.
They usually sell at 3-5 cents a litre less.
You just put in your bank pass and pin to fill up your car.

Considering that I work at a gas station, I find it hard to get nervous buying gas there. But yeah, there are people watching your every move every time you pull up. In most (if not all) gas stations, they even have security cameras to watch what you're doing.

Yeah, same here. I avoid the main branch of the post office in my town, because it is located in the court house. That means if you enter the post office, you have to get stared at by about 6 old men in suits. And they make you put your purse or backpack, or anything you are carrying through this security checkpoint thing. Once they made me put a stack of library books through it. And then they stare at you while you check your post office box or buy stamps. I hated it so much that I started going to another branch further away.

I don't really get nervous going to the gas station but I do find myself going to another station if one is really crowded. It's a quick go in and out situation so not too much to worry about. Other people arent paying attention to how you pump gas so don't worry about that. Most people don't even conversate at the pump unless they know you.

I had a bad experience at a bus terminal a few years ago. An employee who should have known how to deal with the public started saying stuff like "you don't want to get on the bus" for no reason that I could figure out. Maybe I was staring at her while I was trying to hear what she was saying, because I needed to know which bus to get on. I don't like the way that they talk to people at bus terminals, like they are all bad kids. People would start stuff like this when I was in school too, and at some employers. They would use harsh voices and make inappropriate statements.

One time a guy pulled up to a pump I had already tried, and I told him it was out of order.

I was pretty proud of myself
