I read an interview recently with an Oxford maths professor. He said that he remembered as a young boy how he used to look a maths books and how, instead of feeling "fear" like many might feel, he felt a great yearning. He felt "I don't understand any of that, but I am going to understand it."
I also feel a great yearning when I look at maths books, but also despair, because I feel I've missed my chance.

Most of the greatest mathematicians taught themselves. Of course they had books and people to ask questions of, but these days with forums you can ask maths questions all over the world, and discuss it with people who love their subject.

The bulk of any learning must come from yourself, of course. I regret in part that I spend more time reading random things on the Internet than learning maths. It's something I could change...

I used to hate doing math homework, but I was always known as being "gifted" at specifically math. I found it frustrating in high school because for the first time I actually had to work at math problems to learn new things. (I rarely had interest in doing homework, so my marks suffered as a result) I never really liked learning algebra.

Now I'm studying International Finance, but I'm hoping to minor in Statistics and follow that up with some Econometrics. So apparently I love math again. For anyone finding math frustrating, I always found that convincing yourself that you want to do it is a good way of learning. Right now I'm studying Industrial Economics for a final exam. I wasn't really interested in studying until I got stuck on a practise question. I don't like not knowing the answer to a question, so when I get stuck, there's that extra push to go on. Then when things become too easy I get bored. It's a tough Catch-22 situation.

I love math. I majored in it in college. I was always good at it, but it didn't really catch my interest until my first theory course. Then I was sold. I've been in love ever since, though I rarely do any math anymore these days. One of my desires is to get back into math later on, when the kids are grown.

I also very much enjoyed my comp sci theory courses.

I am kind of obsessed with maths but I don't like it all especially geometry cause I can't use a compas well but it doesn't matter.
I like algebra though and can figure things out very quickly

The most difficult challenging problems are dealt with creativity , it's dealt with assuming , transforming and representing the problem at hand.

I became interested in mathematics at 17 , I'm not like the other kids who were just interested in plain but beautiful numbers , I was interested in the abstraction and sheer complexity mathematics could get to that's why I love Category theory but I'm still on my way to finding other alternative subjects to evaluate for the same rigor and level.

I became interested simply by writing out the symbols and looking at how they actually meant something , how everything in it was logical. I always wanted to be more logical but I hated reading long boring books about logic , so I turned to formal symbolic logic that is mathematical logic.

I possess that sort of mind , the logical one ever since I was a kid and I tend to over anticipate things leading to anxiety.

I love numbers and patterns and the like, but math has never been my favourite. I'm not bad at it, I just don't get any enjoyment out of it (probably cause I can't stay focused on it, my mind always wanders). So, obviously, not an obsession for me.

I think my double major in Math and Theoretical Computer Science says enough ;).

My eventual goal is to get a PhD in mathematical logic.

Math is lovely. It's pure logic.

I hated arithmetic as a kid, though. Having to hold all that stuff in my mind at once; having to memorize contextless information like multiplication tables... Ugh. I was horrible at all of that.

Once I got to algebra, though... yeah. I started liking it quite a bit. And by calculus, I loved it.

Statistics is probably my favorite. I like the way you can get information out of what seems like a huge mess of random data.

I used to love doing math for fun. However, I have decided not to take the math route academically since I struggle with the more complex mathematical concepts. So I try not to do anything that is not school-related nowadays (however, I admit, I do get derailed with my autism interest). But I miss math, it's fun. I'm taking statistics right now, but it's not the same. I find it too easy and hence somewhat brain-dulling, i.e. boring.

Sometimes I am obsessed with math. One thing I got obsessed with was the palindrome numbers. I would try to work through all of those. There's one number that goes on forever---I think it is 196.

Explain that... how do you mean "goes on forever"?

I wouldn't say I am obsessed but there have been times in life where I became overstimulated by maths issues. I like the irrational numbers like pi and the square root of 2 etc.

Maths is something that can be appreciated.
