What is hell?

A queue where the person behind me thinks the queue will move faster by standing too close to me. (as in touching my back with their front.) I usually start swinging my foot (casually but firmly) behind me to hit their ankles or shins, they usually move back a bit.

I don't think my way is a good way to deal with it but it's my only way to sort it as of yet. Sry, I went a bit off topic.

I tend to agree more with whats in the "theories section" in this wiki:

"It has been suggested that this description of Hel is of later date, and that she originally was a much more neutral goddess over the realm of shadows, where all, despite their deeds, gather after death. This can be seen as being supported by the etymology of Hel (Lat. Celāre, Ger. hehlen), meaning the "hider". It is important to note that also that Baldr and Sigurd are sent to Hel after their deaths. Bishop Wulfila uses the Gothic word Halja to translate the Greek "Hades."

Viktor Rydberg, in particular, advocated this view. In the book "Our Fathers' Godsaga" he theorizes that the correct name for Loki's daughter is in fact "Leikn" and that, in Christian times, she was confused with Urðr, one of the three Norns and the dís of fate and death. Rydberg's theories are not generally accepted."

I consider Heaven and Hell to be creations of the mind to describe states that we experience in our lives, and nothing more.

The Bible describes Hell this way in Luke 16:19-31,

19"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell,[c] where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

25"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

27"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

29"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

30" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'

31"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "




So in hell people have their memory of their life on earth, they have their senses, they have a body, and they are in unbearable torment forever.

Who goes there and why? John 3:16-21 is one of MANY passages that addresses this:

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[f] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.[g] 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."[h]


God gave His Son to die and thus gave everyone a chance to be saved. But if people love their sin more than they love God and if they will not come to Jesus and trust Him for salvation and repent of their sins, then they go to hell.

To me, hell is a place where extraordinarily evil people go for eternal punishment.

There are constant disputes over what is hellworthy, and what hell is.

The first one: Some people think that even mere tolerance for certain lifestyles is hellworthy (i.e. Westboro Baptist Church's stance on homosexuality). Yet others believe that only the worst of the worst were receive eternal damnation (i.e. only people like Hitler, Stalin, etc. are evil enough to go to hell).

The second one: Some people believe that hell is literally a wasteland consisting of fire and brimstone, and has the ten circles (actually from Dante's Inferno, not the Bible). Others believe it is a place where people are simply irrevocably removed from God--when faced with a dire situation, you're pretty much on your own, when you would normally ask God for help.
