i'm not very good at talking to people at the best of times so if that had happened to me, and i'd decided to return and pay for the item, i would've struggled to explain what happened and tripped over my words while everyone stared at me, thinking that i was a nutter. and i'd be worse off (financially) for my efforts too.

that's exactly what happened to me the one time (and last ever time) I did that, it was a small grocery shop very close to where I was staying. I just felt awkward, the shopkeeper felt awkward too, I messed up the communication completely, I felt bad about it for the rest of the day... then every time I went back into that shop I felt awkward about it, to the point of avoiding that shop and having to walk a very long way to another grocery shop

ok there was another time but that was different, I was with a friend and we somehow managed to walk out a charity shop without paying for some toys and had got half way back to her house before noticing... we just had to go back and pay, stealing kiddies toys from a charity shop really isn't good

it goes the other way too, I've been overcharged and not been able to do anything about it. ordering stuff off the internet is the worst, a few times there's been stuff missing or broken but there's nothing I can do about it, I can't complain or send stuff back because it creates too much uncertainty, and too much awkward communication, and I'd be anxious all the time in case anyone phoned or emailed me, and there's nobody else who will help or do it for me.. I just have to accept the loss otherwise I'll be badly stressed out for days trying to sort things out.

dixons/currys/PC world are pretty bad, they often don't honour a special offer unless you specifically say about it when paying. hobbycraft are the opposite, quite a few times they've accidentally applied a special offer twice, once it was a quite expensive projector which was 25% off, then they accidentally took another 25% off at the till

It depends. If I accidently took something from a small store, I would go back and pay. If it was a multi-national company, I wouldn't bother. Considering I am living on less than £100 a week, why should I prop up the oligarchs, who are making massive profits.

I would bring the item back in to pay and also apologize. It would be unethical to do otherwise. When someone undercharges me, I will mention it as well. That could save the employee from getting in trouble for a short till.

That being said, I don’t feel unethical about these mp3s on my hard drive. Those files are not there by accident. I guess I’m a hypocrite.

Such a situation happened to me earlier this year. I was doing grocery shopping and forgot to put a grapefruit juice on the belt at the register. The carton was in plain view on the cart, but the cashier missed it too. I realized the mistake while verifying the receipt, that I always do after leaving the register. I went to the customer service desk, explained the situation, apologized and paid for the juice. I think I made an incredible bargain - honesty for $2.99.

There is one issue that I am not sure of, though. Every time I am in such a situation, I get invariably asked about which register I went through. I used to answer this question honestly, but it occured to me that store management could use that information to punish cashiers for their inattentiveness, so I stared lying that I didn't remember (especially when I was at fault, and not the cashier). I am not sure if this is a good idea?

I'm pretty damn honest.

They will probably think I actually stole it, and I would be punished. :( I would bring it back though, and apoligise.

If I found a wallet stuffed with money I would hand it over to the police.

I've stolen stupid small things when I was younger, and stupider. I'm extremely honest now.

magic, I think that is probably a wise idea. Everyone makes mistakes. Customers and cashiers alike.

There is no reason I can think of that they would otherwise need that information. It wasn't run through so it shouldn't matter which line it was. It would essentially be like another separate purchase.
