I quote this.. I also talk to me self or someone who isn't there, and I make up stories and scenarios.. Almost like when a child plays with dolls, only the dolls aren't there and I might be occupied with drawing, cooking, cleaning an so while I talk my way through it all.

When I was younger my imaginary friend was a black, white and tan dog. I could sit outside on the stairs and just watch him play in my garden all day. And I had to pat him three times on the head every night before I went to sleep.

He followed me too school and sat by the gates till school day was over, and we both ran home together.

Yes, I do this too.

When I was younger my stuffed animals were my imaginary friends.

My 5 year old Aspie daughter has what I believe to be an imaginary friend. I'm not sure how to explain it. She talks about "Grandma" all the time.
She doesn't have a grandmother and she has never known one, and we don't have any other grandmothers that we're around. Yet she tells me of typical grandmother type things.

"Yesterday I went to my Grandmas house and she made me cookies. My Grandma makes cookies all the time. She likes to make cookies."

I am unsure if she is scripting or not, but I know she gets very angry if I suggest that Grandma is imaginary. We talk about pretend vs real, but she insists she is not pretending.

She never plays with Grandma, or sets a place at the table, or blames her for anything. She simply tells me stories of what happened "yesterday" at Grandmas all the time. This has been ongoing for about 2 years now.

I think I had them until I was about 12. I'm not sure what changed then - maybe I read more books so there was less time for them

I believe mine also went away about the age of 12. I think it might have been because I was put in an environment where that behavior would have been noticed, and I did not want to be scrutinized. Either that or I got a friend who began preoccupying me. My memory is odd. I don't know which it was.

I made up, and wrote about, characters from places I was interested in at various times in my life, including Spain, Japan, Greece and England.

I will be 18 in November, and I still have imaginary friends. They are all from Hellsing and Trinity Blood. The number varies depending on my mood. I recognize the fact that they are a figment of my imagination and that they are, in a sense, mental dolls that I play with as a coping mechanism. But I'm as emotionally attached to them as I would be to friends in the real world. The nice thing about having imaginary friends is that they will never leave you and they will never be mean to you.

That is the great thing about them. And yes you do get very emotionally attached!

By the way guys thanks so much for your responses so far : )

??? how do you make an imaginary friend? just like inventing a character for a book. don't you ever wish or want to be a certain way? always getting beat up? well then i advise a friend who carries a switchblade or knows some kind of martial art. always surrounded by dumb people? well then, luckily you can conjure up a clever, funny friend who always gets your jokes and random comments. you just think of what kind of person would be nice to have around. throw in some physical traits you like and there ya go. it's just an idea that you focus on so much that it becomes slighty stronger and more real than a regular idea.

Here's how I've gotten and kept my imaginary friends:

Take your favorite TV show/movie/book/video game and pick out some characters that you really like.

When you have free time, try to picture yourself in their world, interacting with them. I find it easiest to do this when I stim, but you can do whatever helps you to focus.

Try to imagine having conversations with them. It may seem forced at first, but eventually you'll get so used to it that it will be almost as if they are talking to you of their own accord. Almost.

Whenever you need comfort, imagine them comforting you. Picture them putting a hand on your shoulder, hugging you, smiling at you, telling you sweet nothings... Whatever things make you feel better. This technique is particularly useful if you find yourself too emotionally dependent on people in the real world; this technique was of great help in teaching me to be less emotionally dependent on my mother.

Hope this helps. :)

between the ages of 12 and 14 i created a completely imaginary alien race called the "zymen" who lived on a planet in a big metal pyramid, i created an entire backstory for their history, biology and surroundings, filling in their lifestyles and worries with vivid details...and then started telling people at school they came to take me away to their planet in the night. that made school more interesting...eep!

thing is i was so deluded i truly BELIEVED all these things i'd made up, and got massive emotions from the things i was imagining in my head...i outgrew it eventually of course, but i sometimes wonder if religion or "faith" is a similar sort of mental delusion.x
