This is interesting.

Maybe I'm even more oblivious to social norms than I thought. Either that or it differs by hospital or region or something.

that and people who aren't autistic do the same thing and mess up. More than autistic people mess up at this stuff.

Ana, according to your answer, you do have an intution about this, even if too vague. But you were the only one who sensed that there was some norms sub-text in the wearing or not wearing hospital pajamas.

Could you mean me? I guessed that you wore pajamas, but actually it wasn't because of intuition. This why I thought that:

Quote:
You're walking around, reading a book, passing the time, on the phone with family and friends, not in bed.

I noticed the particular mention of not being in bed. If you were in bed, then pajamas would probably be the natural choice. Since you took especial care to mention that you weren't in bed, and since there was clearly supposed to be something "odd" about your behavior, I figured you must have worn pajamas. So I guess I worked it out by logic rather than by intuition- well, I am on the spectrum after all! I had no clue why this was Aspie-related, and I have to say that I still don't get it, so I'll take your word for it.

I would wear something comfy to the hospital then continue to wear it until it was time to change into the gown for surgery...

PJs I gues for me are comfy cloths... But my pjs are not pjs at all ..
in the summer I wear white tshirts & mens boxers
and in the winter I wear cute sweats..>

I certainly would not get all dressed up to go sit at the hospital...

Same clothes I wear all the time. Meerkat/Lion King T-shirt with denium shorts and hair tied back in a pony tail. They could never get hospital clothes on me in the first place, let alone have me take them home with me. I will die of infection before I wear one of those tacky gowns.

mmm. I think I react to not getting social norm/social positioning cues by trying to work around it. On one level or another, I'm very aware of it.

I stand ready to defend my decision with an explanation (whether it be about clothes, hairstyle, reason for saying something, whatever) at all times and I am always talking through it with myself, to make sure I have one if asked. It's become so natural now....

Actually you are supposed to wear hospital rope and tights (to stop deep vein thrombosis) for the op. I got told off for wearing my boxer shorts. Apparently I was suppose to attend a pre op meeting. However I never received anything stating that. After I could wear what I like I think.

I'd wear the hospital gown because they're going to ask me to change into it eventually anyway, so I might as well do it right away. Though I won't be on the phone. I don't do phones. Also, those gowns are breezy and comfy and full of awesome.

When I'm in the hospital, they always tell me (or whoever I'm with, if being rude) "Put these on and I'll be back in a minute," pretty explicitly.

I think they always put the tights on me when I'm unconscious, not when I'm putting the robe on.

When I was in the hospital, I just wore what they gave me (plus my own underpants).

I probably would've worn my own clothes if I knew I could (didn't know until a week or so before I left), but then you risk getting blood/whatever on them, and it's tricky to get a shirt on when you've got IVs in your arm.

same pants I wore yesterday......because they are soft and comfy....
and t-shirt....soft, soft, soft and black and lots of room to either gain weight or lose weight....so I don't have to buy a new one.
