I can't stand the sound that computers make when they're downloading something, or updating. It sounds like a high pitched 'eeeee" ringing.

I do like the sounds of fans going. It's kind of soothing, but I hate the sound of pop-ups being blocked or that sound of the click of a page being called up. Sometimes, for whatever reason that click will keep going and then I have to close the browser and start over or that click will not stop. I always thought it's because the connection isn't good. Unrelated opinionoid here, but the other sound I hate are car alarms going off. Nobody seems to pay any attention, not even the owners, so what's the point of having them at all . . .

Has anyone ever considered getting a computer so outrageously over-beefed for anything you might actually use it for just to get rid of annoying processing noises?

You can disable both of those.

Don't need to "over-beef" it...just depends on the hard drive. Maxtors are notorious for being noisy (as well as for failing), I'm using a Western Digital IDE right now (temporarily) and I can barely hear it at all.

I've also got a SATA drive, and it took me a while to get used to the fact that I couldn't hear the computer "think".

What's the difference between an IDE and ATA drive?

OK a little off topic but you guys seem to know what your talking about, maybe you can help me.

I have a 500 gig hard drive that im quite happy with, iv used around 150 - 200 so far but have had this problem for a few months now.

All of a sudden all the files on there be it music, pics or anything i can not edit, delete or move yet they work fine. The music plays, the pics i can view
but if i try to delete, move or edit then names it says this file is corrupt or unreadable. Some times it says please run the disc clean up or somthing which i do and it takes hours (hours that i cant use the computer when its running) and it dose nothing to affect the files, there still the same, useable but not able to edit in any way.

Any ideas?

constant sounds like hums are okay, any kind of irregular sound make me wonder what's going on. More often than not I stopped what I was doing to see what program is causing harddisk activity. I especially hate the beeping of my craptop when it is in dire need of power.

when it beeps, then freezes. First because it's an annoying sound, and second, because it freezes.
