I have had this experience my whole life, most of my family thought me to be nuts over it. I can't stand the taste of virtually any silverware.

I have found just two types (which I have bought plenty of over the years) which do not produce this taste in my mouth.

The first is glass. Glass is my favorite but I am somewhat clumsy so glass utensils are not easy on my wallet.

The second is pewter. Pewter holds up better for me because of my clumsiness, and I can't taste anything with pewter utensils either.

I'd recommend looking for glass or pewter and trying them out to see as I've tried almost every type of utensil and all had horrible tastes to me except those two.

This happens, isn't limited to those on the spectrum (though your different sensory construction might highlight it) and can be a sign of something bad going on.

Has this all my childhood.

It pretty much stopped in the recent 2-4 years.

Interesting to hear that other people experience(d) this too.

If I touch the silverware with my teeth I get a strange taste/sensation -- otherwise, it doesn't bother me.

I rarely have the issue with silverware taste, but when I do, I really do, and try to get a different set of cutlery, or just stuff my face too hard to taste it.

Silver-wary topic

I used to taste the silverplate cutlery my mother trotted out for Sunday dinners. The flavour was somewhat salty. I later learned what I was tasting was the residue from the polish she used to clean it!! ! 8O :bounce: :eew: :eew: :eew: :eew:  :skull:

I am surprised :o I was not poisoned! :(

This is interesting. I knew AS pt have differant problems with taste and texture, yet I did not realize how far it went.
Thank you all for enlightening me.

I know that so well!

Nickel silver (alloy made of copper, nickel and zinc) with a worn-off silver pating is really disgusting, because of elecropotential.
It's OK as long as the silver plating is OK.

Bronze, copper, aluminium: yuck!! ! especially with sour food... :eew:

Modern silverware is stainless steel with silver plate, no bad taste there.

Cheap stainless steel hast just alittle chrome in it (13%), its not really rustproof and may cause bad taste.

More expensive stainless steel has 18% chrome and 8-10% nickel. It's the best choice in my opinion, no bad taste there for decades.

Brass is OK to me if used as a stimming toy... I always have a piece of brass wire laying around here.

I hate the taste. I can even taste the plastic in plastic utensils.

Never noticed it. I've eaten off of Sterling, but didn't notice anything. I use stamped stainless all the time, but usually don't taste anything different.

However, the ice in home ice-makers doesn't taste nearly as good as the stuff from fast food ice-makers. I guess that's my little peeve. The really clear ice just seems to taste better...

That's cuz fast food places have insanly sophisticated water purification systems. I know this because I have worked at mcdonalds and seen the system the have. And I would never use ice made in a fast food place, just because it is really easy for them to become contaminated. At mcdonalds there were idiots who for fun would throw mac sauce into the ice ... fortunatly those 2 got fired.

I remember a time when I noticed the metallic taste of silverware. It doesn't bother me so much now. Perhaps I have gotten use to it? I can add this---I find a drink like milk to taste quite different to me if I use a straw. I also have noticed that the ice cubes from our ice maker sometimes have a weird taste (more evident when put in water than a soda).
