I always broke it down as so. -

Geeks - Anime, video games, comic books, pop culture ect. Social ineptitude.
Nerds - Academia/intellectual pursuits. Social ineptitude.
Dorks - No specific interests, skills or talents. Social ineptitude.

I always called my self a nerd with a few geeky tendencies.

I'm a Neek. I pour a lot into my special interests, but also have to learn other things for school, which I enjoy. Once I'm in a working environment, probably working on Physics, I'll be a full-on geek.

From those descriptions, I would be mostly a nerd, but also a dork. But I don't like either of those words, so I just refer to myself as a geek.

People confuse you with a Nerd all of the time. You aren't some genius, like some people have said, and didn't/don't really like school all that much (and you especially hated some of the social aspects, like getting mocked). It's just that you have some passions and interests that you're extremely into/good at, and this has placed you in circles with other social outcasts, some of whom are exceptionally bright.

The awesome thing about being where you are is that you get to hang out with an elite group (though you'd probably rather be alone, or with only the closest friends and family) and you can make quite a good career for yourself in your particular specialities. Common to this group are people who are highly into electronics/computers as that is where the money lies, today.

Impressive, too bad my geeky special interests and ADD get in the way of me being a computer savant.

Outcast Genius

Outcast geniuses usually are bright enough to understand what society wants of them, and they just don't care! They are highly intelligent and passionate about the things they know are *truly* important in the world. Typically, this does not include sports, cars or make-up, but it can on occassion (and if it does then they know more than all of their friends combined in that subject).

Outcast geniuses can be very lonely, due to their being outcast from most normal groups and too smart for the room among many other types of dorks and geeks, but they can also be the types to eventually rule the world, ala Bill Gates, the prototypical Outcast Genius.

I guess by the OP's standards I'm not sure if I'm a geek, or a special kind of nerd. I have become quite broad in my narrow interest! My specific interest being computers and technology, yet I am kind of a jack-of-all-trades within that category. Does that make me a geek, or a computer-nerd? Ahh, semantics. . .

There's plenty of shame if you look hard enough. Just none in this thread.

Pure Nerd

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

It's not as though you were some whiz-kid in school. Oh, sure, you probably did okay in some classes, but were probably awful in others. Certainly most people thought you were smarter than you thought yourself to be. And it's not that you have some overriding passion, like computers or Star Trek that sets you apart for the crowd, though you likely share some interest in some of those sorts of things. You just like to be yourself, and want to express yourself for who you are.

And, really, there's nothing wrong with that. Being who you are often invites scorn, and so it's a difficult thing in a world that rewards conformity. Be proud of your dorkiness, for often it's just another word for individuality. (I'd vote for you!)

this reminds of an excellent book I read a few years back called "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn.

oh, and I see myself as a neek.

I think that nerd would best the best fitting description, according to the definitions. I seem to be full of useless knowledge.(although some of it is useful)
