Autistic powers/ talents
I'm terrible at remembering names too. I've had a teacher for two years now and only last month did I properly remember her name, LOL.
I'm good at Science(top of the class on all tests this year). I wish I could say I was good at Maths, but my grades say I'm mediocre. I work fast through the work sheets, but when it comes to the tests, I can't remember all the methods.
I also notice patterns, but when it's things like wallpapers and such with patterns, it can make me really dizzy...
I also have a pretty good memory when I'm interested in the subject, like I was reading religious statistics, and I remembered all of them, and I remember when I was obsessed with ants(around 6 years old) I knew _a lot_ about them, and I didn't have to repeat them or anything, and I'd be perfectly happy the spend all my free time reading about ants and the different species, and today I'm pretty good with computers, and remember most things about computers.
Unfortunately, with things like my French, I do terrible in remembering things. Admittedly, I gave up in attempting to be good at French after around 2 months of learning it(my high school is a Language college, so we have to learn French[and the people in the top to sets has to learn French and German] and do at least 1 language for GCSE), because I just sucked at it. I spent around 6 hours trying to remember 5 paragraphs, and when it came to the day, I could only remember one... I also don't really have a great excuse since I remember a lot of things in Science but do no revision(but am perceived to do hours, I think) which _really_ sucks.
I don't know what my IQ is, but I don't think it's that high, I took an online test once and it was 113.
I guess knowing a lot of facts and statistics makes it remotely interesting to talk to me in some lessons, and being able to remember articles, and products, and information from documentaries, and facts about people, but it kind of evens out when I can't remember things other people find really easy to do.
I'm still glad with what I can do though . I'd rather be how I am than mediocre at everything
.

1. Phenomenal long term episodic memory
What do you mean by this?
Anyway, bad short term memory but a great long term one.
I notice things no one else does. For example spelling mistakes.
As in autobiographical memory. Remembering events and experiences no matter how trivial. For instance remembering precisely what a person was wearing when you first met them and the conversation that you had.
I've basically relied on this area of memory at university since my short term visual memory, ie. that used whilst reading books, is awefull. I;ve had to compensate by remembering what supervisors and course mates have told me in conversation etc...
Also, i;m talking about autism spectrum disorders in general so HFA and aspies... "autisitc powers" just had a nicer ring to it lol
i seem to notice a whole new layer of reality then most people i meet (noticing details).
i can visualize things pretty good in my head (patterns and pictures).
i always remember where i put things and such, i also remember things that have happened a long time ago, and such that other people seem to neglect.
i am very disciplined compared to most people iknow.
yeah, and i am invincible...
neh, all in all i dont think i am very special, sure i am smart, but i still barely get by so i dont think my "smartness" is that great in the big scheme of things...
ah and i pick up languages quite easy, know a little Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, German and Latin:)
This whole "Aspie Superpower" trip may be promoting something positive, but it also generates negativity towards aspies from non-aspies. I say this because I am a firm believer that aspies aren't anything that special. Sure, some aspies can have their gifts, but so can some non-aspies. People like to shed positive light on what others assume to be "broken", but in reality aspies aren't broken, just different.
When I see things like this, it feels as if you are taking away what EVERYONE has the potential to do (not any individual for any given trait, just any random person with potential for specifics).
I have my own advantages and disadvantages, just like anyone else in this world. I may be more inclined towards specific advantages and disadvantages given my situation, but doesn't that also apply to everyone?
Should we make a thread now about the super powers gangsters have, since they are also looked at negatively?

Permanently inane.
I can do arithmetic in my head very easily. It's a "savant-oid" trait that is extremely common on my mom's side of the family. Autistic traits also runs on my mom's side which strongly suggests the math ability and the autistic traits are linked, even though the math ability shows up in NT relatives. Nobody was surprised when the math trait popped up in my NT niece!
Like other posters in this thread I have an uncanny ability to see patterns in things other people can't.
Ditto with Long-term memory.
