Due to knee problems, I don't like walking much. (Or, rather, my knees hate me and swell up if I do too much walking.)

However, I enjoy long bicycle rides. I load up my MP3 player, load water in my camelback and will spend 6 hours or so on a long ride and just explore the bike trails.

Not if they donn't involve a specific purpose or destination.

If I'm walking, it's either part of another activity (hunting, mountian climbing, etc) or to get to point B.

Extended walking helps me problem-solve, sort out my internal dialogue, process emotions, and of course is good healthy exercise. This has always been a solitary activity for me, and tends to take on a spiritual/philosophical quality the further I go... almost like the act of walking wakes up my soul.

Thirded.

Going long walks if I have some nature around me, yes! Other than that: no, not really.

My current record is 42 km in one day (not sure what that is in miles: 25?), though I wouldn't do it again any time soon.

Last two years I hiked over 1,000 km/year. It's therapy - my sanity totally depends on this exercise right now. It needs to be in the woods, though, away from the madding crowds, to do me any good. And actually, to make it more challenging/goal oriented, I've taken up trail maintenance on some of the "unowned" trails. I do need a challenge to focus my mind, otherwise it doesn't take me out of myself enough.

Hikes typically from 3 to 10 hours, depending on daylight and where the snowline is in the mountains (I don't do snow unless it's already packed).

My personal record is at 34 km on one day. This is without a long rest, just small pauses. I know I can beet it if I could, but I'm not sure if I would be able to motivate myself in order to do this, though.

Good shoes is defintely a must, since I, unfortunately threw up when I came home after my feet was filled with blisters and my feets was all wet. This was last year when I needed to go to the bank. The bank was closed down in my hometown a while ago.

It was an interesting experience and I definitely value good shoes for these things.

Usually I might not be too happy about going on long walks, but usually I enjoy them.

I want to do a 145 km run through the Rockies, but I will never be in the physical condition to do that thanks to lung damage.

I find that long-duration repetitive-motion activities - walking, hiking (the distinction to me being that hiking involves varied terrain), cycling, swimming - as well as long drives, train rides, etc., are essential for "getting my head straight" and sorting out feelings. Sometimes a long walk is that much better with the iPod; other times it is a distraction from the "conversation with myself" (not always of the silent variety) that is occurring. I have streaks where I am reclusive and in serious need of these activities, and other periods where I can go for a while without them.

i do, absolutely. typical time is 2 hours. it is not hiking, but in the city, streets, along a watercourse or rails. or just finding shorter routes between two places i know. it clears bad thoughts from mind.

I really love hiking in my vacation. But I still don't know whether I prefer hiking alone or hiking with other people. I've tried both ways.

On the one hand I'd rather hike alone so that I don't need to talk all the time. But on the other hand when being alone I'm starting to feel really lonely after a few days.

Do you recognise this?

Hiking in nature is preferred. Walking anywhere is better than not walking at all. Thinking about past hikes is better than many other things to meditate about. I used to hike and walk all the time. I need to get back into the habit. It is so good for the spirit. Time spent walking is never time wasted.

Thanks for the topic. It brought back some great memories of hikes in different places.

I love walking. It annoys me to see lazy people who, when travelling from Point A to Point B, take a car or bus to go stupidly short distances. I saw a woman get on the bus this week to travel about 200 yards! :x
