Sometimes when I hear Aspies and Autism talk about Neurotypicals on Youtube etc..., they say the word Neurotypical in a usually negative or patronizing tone.

Any I the only one who finds this annoying?

i'm not really into it. i find it fairly divisive and silly. i'll use NT as a term occasionally, but on the whole, we are all just human beings. kind of reminds me of apartheid!

Same here. I especially get annoyed when people say "Leave it to an NT" or "That's just like an NT" like we're superior to the rest of the world. Please.

Homosexuals sometimes say "breeders" referring to heterosexuals. Also African Americans say "crackers." The southern part of the US refers to the northern part as "yankees." So, actually it's very common for the minority to give the majority a name.

Daywalkers to describe Neurotypicals... yeah - does sound a bit less aggressive.

I prefer the therm "averege person" (vs unusual person), that way it gets acknowledged that everybody is different, and that autistics happen to fit a criteria in the end of the human spectrum, and that it's mostly about who you choose to identify with.

Ahha!! Labels eh!!

Neurotypicals? Autistics? Duh, what does that tell anyone? I hate the alphabet soup that we can be labelled with so came up with the analogy JELIBEANS! Far kinder and easier to get your head around. So for us ALL those on the spectrum (my spectrum is massive, we include ADD, ADHD, PDDnos, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, ODD,CD, Aspergers, Autism............and the list goes on and on  ) we use the term jelibeans. Colourful with a crispy sometimes brittle shell and a gooey centre! We are all different flavours, colours and shapes. But so as not to leave the neurotypicals out we call them marshmallows!!

Check it out! Let me know your thoughts!! :D

I use it sometimes, but I agree - I hate it when people use it as a negative to bash or condescend to regular people. :x

Oh yes because "normal" people just never ever say words like "ret*d" "socially ret*d" "mildly ret*d (used to describe those with aspergers) "ass burgers" or anything derrogatory at all.

Never say the word fag or gay out of context either.

From what I've noticed, there are people who ruin what words really mean by spreading their skewed negative version and leaving the word tainted. I don't think neurotypical should be a tainted word nor do I think autism, HFA or aspergers but when someone gets frustrated they can say mean things.

What is more harmful are those that skew up words to hurl as insults and input their own defintion because currently our dictionary is going through a spin cycle.

Ignorance is strength right now. It's clearly shown by opening your eyes and looking at actions and listening to words used out of context.

Actions used to speak louder than words. Now people are listening to words and ignoring action.

If you find neurotypical offensive, now you know how homosexuals feel. Now you know how women feel. Now you know how people with disabilities feel. Now you know how people with differences feel.

I don't get how on one hand, alot of NT's I've met hate labels if it describes differences but LOVE labels on clothing and will pay more.

yeah, i think it's ridiculous. nobody is truly 'neurotypical'. the only normalcy is that everyone is in some way atypical.

Or a number.

My two cents... I've seen some rants on this place that basically says that 'neurotypical' is a false/incorrect word for normal people who have nothing wrong with them. Well, who said they are automatically normal. Well, if you look at the suffix '-typical,' it is, in my opinion, based how on the general population of people without a "disorder" are typically viewed as.

And on the other side of the moon, I'm also against the negative feelings towards "NTs" as a general population. I've met quite a few of them who are really awesome. One recent friend wouldn't even listen to me when I told him about my Asperger's, he simply didn't care if I was in any way different. Also tried to help me with whatever problems I may have been having, trying to get me to hang out with people he knew, who in turn were also cool towards me. So f*** the negative view. If you wanna use the word NT, as I've said in this post, I'm perfectly fine with it. Just don't abuse the word, please. That is what offends me.

I've been raised as one lol

I don't have a problem with it. To me neurotypical just means "not autistic." I also don't have a problem with normal or normies, normal just means what is most common. If the whole world was autistic, autistic would be normal.

I also agree that it's not fair to "NT bash." You can't ever judge a whole group whether it's NTs, Aspies, black, white, whatever. Some NTs are jerks. Some Aspies are jerks. I know plenty of kind and caring NTs. We're not better or worse than anyone else because we have Aspergers!

I know its common for the minority to give the majority a name, but its not so common that the majority will use that name for themselves, its especially less common that they'd even declare it an official name for them selves.
