Is a Depression better for Aspies?
India and China are getting hit HARDER. China's manufacturing is taking a 'nosedive' due to them making the stuff the other parts of the world (Especially USA) buys. As the US cuts down/back,,,,
Of COURSE they're getting hit harder...when the US gets hit, everybody gets hurt, because we're basically now in the position where we make or break the world economy. I know everyone is thinking "oh, don't say that!". Think what you want folks, I'm just stating the facts.
Why do you think Putin is freaking out at the thought of us dropping Capitalism, same with China?
As someone else here said "Capitalism makes socialism possible".
If the US economy isn't that great, no matter WHAT country are workers are in, they're not gonna get paid as much cause they won't do as much, since we won't have the money to pay 'em to do it. Then, EVERYBODY suffers.
I'd go into more detail, but I have this strange gut feeling I really shouldn't.
So instead, I'll refer everyone to solopassion.com, and mises.orgSOLOLudwig Von Mises Institute of Economics

er, the beatles sang that long before the 1980's.
anyway, i agree with the OP. I'm kind of going through poverty. i barely have any food and all i seem to buy is concert tickets and cds.
Well thank you for telling me, but in fairness I wouldn't know cause I think the Beatles suck.
I DEFINITELY think they had the right idea about it, though! Too bad Yoko Ono changed John Lennon's opinion, though...
([OT:] well, you might like to know where the term "it sucks" comes from and why it is a pejorative. In prison, there are those who suck and those who get sucked. When 'it sucks' it is in the inferior position (the female position, but I'm not going there)
I lived on the land from 1976 to 1984 and when I came back to civilization I could not believe a young girl at the mall was saying the term to her mother! and loudly.
similar language changes. . .'jazz' refered to particularly raunchy sex, circa 1900's; hence - Jazz music. I get a special little laugh when the rigid and upright Salt Lake City hosts the 'Jazz' sports team . . .[/OT])

Yeah, I know MOST of these terms come from jail; found that out from my SCIENCE teacher back in Jr. High!
According to Alan Cohen's book "Why Your Life Sucks and What You Can Do About It", though, it doesn't mean that anymore; it means something "sucks the life out of anything". Many people may still believe it means the former, though. And I REALLY hate using the term "it stinks". What...does it smell bad or something? I mean, really...

No...my SCIENCE TEACHER DID. Alan Cohen was the one who said how the slang has been updated to a more "family friendly" meaning...although most people don't get that.
P.S. Instead of a car with its insurance payments and gas expenses, ride a bike, walk, or use public transportation.
I live alone, and have been surviving for 6+ months on less than $500 per month. It's not what I'd call comfortable, but it is possible. Right now, I would feel rich with $1000.
Humm, can you break down costs for us?
^Yeah, I have no house payment and I don't drive(can't afford it, even though I own a truck). Because I filed for SSD(disability), I qualify for welfare/medical assistance, which pays for gas, electric, food, dr. appts, and meds. So basically, I only have to pay for TV, telephone, water, computer(DSL), some groceries, and cigarettes(trying to quit). Well under $500.
I should add that it's only temporary, and I don't recommend it as a lifestyle, because it sucks, and should only be done when you've run out of options.

I respectfully must disagree with the OP.
The current economic condictions are not favorable for aspies because aspies generally have not built up the informal "social" networks required to advance or survive in a recessionary economy. The "lower rungs" of the economy are being wiped out on a daily basis, and many of the "higher rungs" are unavailable at this time.
At least in the US, the upper-middle class ranks are mainly filled by sales and "social skills" based professions, which are usually not considered our specialty. I am not saying that there are not aspies in those professions.
Historically, aspies do best in non-traditional sectors, see generally the history of the early industrial revolution, and also the advent of the electrical, chemical, communication, and automotive industries, the postwar "great moderation", and also the stunning achievement of the microchip and all that flowed from it. However, with the exception of the software indrustry, all of the non-traditional sectors require start-up capital, which is scarce in a recessionary economy, let alone a recessionary economy caused by a credit crisis and with signs of deflation.
it's nice to have a roof over the head and food in the belly, though. And the internet.

This is good written! I myself have a personal philosophy which is based on the fact that it's what you can do with what you have which is more important than to focus on all the things you cannot do with the things you don't have.

I'm sorry that I caused this depression. I predicted it in early 2008 when they called a 20% chance of a RECESSION. Now it is a depression and I said it on this board under one of my feeling depressed posts. I don't want this to happen, but the unemployment is going to either be in the high 9% range to over 10% by the end of the year. In November 2008, I wrote down predictions for 2009 and one of them was the unemployment was going to hit at least 8% and it did yesterday. I wrote that when it was only 6.5% and I predicted that in the beginning of that year when unemployment was only 4.9%. So you know its my fault, I'm even more accurate than paid economists! I see it in my dreams or should I say nightmares. Bush and I caused it together. How fun! Not!

Humm, what do you do for housing costs? Rent, etc?
... Such as a lot of people in Western Sydney, who pride themselves on being "battlers", whilst maintaining a McMansion, inground pool and hotted-up Commodore* . And are Today Tonight and A Current Affair any higher-quality when shown on a plasma screen? I don't think so. (Whoops, got a bit heavy-handed swinging the cliché stick around. But then, countless people are content to live as clichés anyway...) All that money pissed up the wall on excessive private consumption, when it could've been invested in beefing up our infrastructure and social services.

I am also skilled in knowing how to get by using very little money. I can live very comfortably on about $1000 a month. Most people don't know how to do that.
My biggest fear about the current economic cotastraphy is hyper inflation. As the US federal reserve prints and borrows more money to make up for the US Federal governments deficiets and to stablilize the finacial sector the overall money supply is increased greatly. As we all know, the more there is of something, the less it is worth. From 2000 to 2007 the Federal reserve created more dollars than had been created for the rest of US history before that time frame. I do not see how we can aviod a hyper inflation scenario reminicent of Weimar Germany. 1000$ a month doesn't mean much when it costs 20$ to buy a loaf of bread.

I'm not bothered by it, cause my goal is to succeed, regardless of the circumstances. I don't care what most people tell you...they TELL you their goal is to succeed..but that's only as long as everyone else does things properly by them. Not buying it. I expect nothing from others, so I push harder than anything for my own sake.

Yes, true. But if you have college student loans and debt, inflation is good because it causes me to be able to pay it off more quickly and get out of debt.
You're full of s**t if you think you have any control over it at all.
I don't think anyone benefits from a recession. As others have noted, people on the bottom of the totem pole end up with nothing during a recession. The idea that aspies are more successful in a recession is based on the idea that richer people become poor but poor people don't become destitute, they simply remain poor. Well, it's likely that poor people will be pushed lower and become destitute, at which point being happy living on $1000/month will still be out of reach. I'm opposed to living outside of your means as well, but still, I can't see how this situation is going to be any better for anyone.
