I definitely go deeper than that when I write, but for a beginner to understand how to do a thesis, I would assume they want something simple to begin with. I was a special ed teacher and am currently a special ed tutor, which is one reason I simplify things.[/quote]
There is a deeper problem: Without understanding the anti-thesis, you never understand the thesis. So it just a technique to show that you understood what you are writing about.
But I see there is problem: They have a strong tendency to get over complicated and hard to read. In the German speaking world it even developed into an old and very strong prejudice: Any text which is easy to read or understand can't have any real academic merits.
We're in total agreement, Dussel.
If you only knew how long it often takes to teach a high school student how to forumulate a simple main idea, you would see why I didn't go into full detail about the antithesis. You have to start somewhere.
I completely agree with you that the antithesis is essential. In fact, I teach writing for a living.
