sadly, right now I'm not doing anything. In the past I have worked as an aide the in the ICU at the hospital (disaster), burger flipper at McDonald's (major disaster), tech support for a major airlines website (MAJOR disaster), substitute paraprofessional (ok), home health aide (good with children but not adults) and now I'm unemployed.

Interesting question. As of today, I just interviewed for the job I'm working in (ain't that surreal? who's more qualified?...;)

Until the near future I'm a print queue operator for a major company campus, keeping the paper flowing...;) I've been told that I will be seeing more laptop and desktop repairs in my future...;)

If I get hired...still waiting on an offer...;)

That's not as weird as it sounds as I've done it a couple of times.

No job at the moment, but this fall I expect to either be driving some sort of truck, beginning an apprenticeship as a drilling rig technician, or go into mining.

Oh.. and past jobs I have held:

waitress- 2 mos
greeter- 1 mo
therapist- 2 months, 3 different agencies (I do have two MA's)
casemanager- 4 years, 4 different agencies, 2 states
special education teacher- 2 years, 3 different jobs, 2 states
"phone lady" for the phone company- 1.5 yrs

This is my entire career, since getting my second masters at the age of 23. There were occasional temp jobs scattered in there.

I have worked for myself from 1996 until now. Sometimes, I have made no profit and relied on family support and other times, I've done ok. Now, I'm on SSDI and doing the online tutoring thing, which works perfectly because I am a private contractor at home.

I got my Ph.D. in engine research. However, I am thinking about leaving the science career path.

Science appears to be detrimental toward developing other areas of my life. Science = no money, geeky social outcast, mocked by women. I have actually observed a woman mock a whole series of speakers (not me) at the 2007 Hertz Foundation conference. The gender imbalance in the sciences/engineering is also a serious problem (for men) from the standpoint of finding appropriate spouses, in addition to all the other concerns. It’s been interesting, meaningful, fun, mind expanding and all that. However, I must not remain in this area of work if doing so will keep me in an uncomfortable position and prevent my life from fully developing. I must be in the wrong place if what I do is not socially valued and not financially rewarded.

You should consider working in biotech. You don't necessarily need a biology degree; there are plenty of opportunities for engineers/physicists/computer scientists. The male/female ratio is closer to 50/50. For some reason a majority of science/technology oriented women major in biology.

I currently work in a DNA manipulation lab (research).
I used to synthesise proteins of medical interest but now they've moved me from the phenotype to the genotype, which is seen as more prestigious but it's quite menial really, at least at the level on which they trust me to do it. I can't be arsed to re-educate myself and become an expert (they never teach the work coherently). I've done that before but they went and changed my remit, rendering all that hard work redundant. Won't get fooled again.
Before that, performing clinical assays on hospital patients' blood samples (for research) was my way of earning a crust. Nobody could equal my throughput or the quality of my results, I changed that job beyond recognition.

I also spent a year or two in a worker co-operative growing culinary and medicinal herbs.

The best times have always been when I'm given my head and allowed to develop my own methods. Sadly, the bureaucrats are gradually hammering us all into a mould of insensitive standardisation, so it's harder to be autonomous - all purchases must be approved, even the bigwigs can't buy from the suppliers they personally prefer.

I'm a librarian. In the past, I've worked as an office assistant at a university, did data entry for my state Senate, and was a temp in a print shop.

Retired. But I keep rather busy with various volunteer activities.

Since I have adequate savings I do not need to work for pay anymore. I can do what I find intellectually and spiritually profitable.

As of this moment, I'm on SSI and I don't have a job. But I want to get a bachelor's degree and become a graphic designer, and eventually an English teacher who lives and works in Japan.

Aside from being a concessions cashier at a very popular hotel/waterpark resort in the Sandusky, Ohio vicinity, as you all know, I also own my own business.
