I used to have this vacant, sort of dazed expression on my face most of the time, and it used to really bother my mum who kept telling me I looked ugly when I had that expression, and to "animate" my face. After years of this I eventually trained myself to "animate" my face (yes, this is possible, strangely enough - It's to do with being constantly aware of your facial muscles, and always keeping some sort of expression on your face; happy/sad/whatever, preferably one that matches your surroundings (or people get weirded out)). It eventually became natural and automatic to hold my face in certain positions, and I no longer get the "expressionless face" commentary. I can fake smile in my sleep, these days.
