I do remember being shown cards with words and pictures on them at Primary School, when I was taken out of class.

One card had the word "Envelope" printed on it.

I was asked by the aide to look at the word and say what I words thought about when I saw that word.

I replied:
"Envelope, Penelope, Antelope, People, Pope, Open, Cope, Love, Envelop, Elope, Rope, Environment, Elephant and Cello-tape".

I don't really know what the point of the exercise really was at the time other than to see perhaps what a poetic, dyslexic and divergent thinker I was.

Maybe I misunderstood the question, but the aide seemed strangely pleased with me...

Was that an exact memory of what words you said or did you just give a rough educated recollection of an old not complete memory?

I'm just wondering because I have terrible word memory. So I find that pretty amazing if you remembered that exactly.

Until I was 14, no one in my family even knew what aspergers was. I was always told off by my mother for being 'difficult' & I didn't even know what I was doing wrong. It was just after my 14th birthday when I got treatment for depression that aspergers was also suspected, then later diagnosed. I have been to a social group with other youth with AS, just to meet people like myself & to learn ways to cope with it. I am also seeing a counsellor fortnightly who specializes in helping people with AS & I guess that counts since I'm technically still a minor.

EDIT: I realized I have missed something important. I also completed a course which was aimed to help youth with mental health problems (since I was depressed at the time) get back into school, start a course or find work.

I went to a small school, it wasn't a 'special' needs school, but because the class sizes were extremely small, the teacher was able to keep an eye on me more than if I had been mainstreamed, and well my parents put me there when i was diagnosed as autistic, with this school, their (my parents) constant help and I guess what would have been considered counselling for a few years (unfortunately been back in counselling for the last 10-12 years on and off again), I was fortunate to have my parents. My life isn't perfect, but I got married (22 years this year), and have 2 kids in university, I have good days and bad days, but its ok

That was pretty exact, give or take perhaps the odd word.

I used to recite songs, poetry and TV shows by rote.

It's not that hard if you have pictures in your mind to work with or sound it out. It's a question of practice really. If you're enthused about the material, that helps a lot too.

The people in the scene do seem fuzzy though, but I remember the card and my response quite clearly though.
