It might have been based on different savants but rainman isn't real, impossible to compare.

I also saw the movie again, after several years. I was amazed that now Cruise seems like a complete impatient git. When I first saw it when it came out, my impression was the opposite. Also I now know that the toothpick scene is lifted out of Oliver Sack's book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat." It's in the chapter relating to twins who were absolute math wizards.
As for how I compare?? I sometimes still stare into space. I've practiced eye contact. I've never been a math wizard. I walk quite normally, albeit at a fast clip.

You must have missed these sections of my post:

... I am like Rainman in some ways; dislike the unexpected/changes of routine; have a need for my "particular-objects"; am freaked out by noise, especially high-pitched; need, not a TV to watch, but things to read; have to wear certain clothes, ( mainly natural-fibres, baggy/loose, monochrome most of the time, etc ); have my bed in certain positions; an increasing dislike of certain kinds of transport, ( though in my case it's the car; vibrations and speed ); dislike of/hypersensitivity to touch, ( which upsets the father of my son ); hate having my belongings messed about with, etc, though nowhere near as rigid/extreme, at least in most things, as Rainman ...

Conclusion; I am both considerably higher functioning, ( though not that much in some ways; I haven't had a job in years, am financially dependent on the father of my son, for instance ), and different, in that I am not a "savant", though I am "gifted".

This was your question, right? ( the original one that I answered, before you edited it )

Greentea wrote:
What do you think, comparing yourself to Rain Man? Do you see yourself as a different kind or a more / less functioning autistic than him?

And in my answer I concluded that I was higher-functioning and also different, in other words impossible to place myself on a one-dimensional spectrum in comparison to him.

The most obvious difference between me and Rain Man is that not even Dustin Hoffman could make me seem like an interesting character.

As Raymond is a Hollywood creation he's such a hybrid of symptoms and behaviors, I don't know if he accurately resembles any real autistic specifically. The savant stuff, though a useful device for the film, does us all a disservice in creating another mythological stereotype. I guess there are those on the HFA side of the spectrum who function at a similar level, but I feel like calling Raymond Babbitt high-functioning is a little misleading - apparently he's capable of toileting and dressing himself, but if you gave him an apartment and sent him a disability check every month, he'd still starve because he doesn't understand money and would never leave the house to go shopping by himself if he did. If you can't safely be left alone, I don't really consider that very high functioning.

However, to answer the question: I still feel very much connected to the character when I watch the film. Whatever critique I can give the performance, I recognize myself in nearly every response and reaction Raymond displays to the social pressures his brother puts him under. Right down to his pat response to any question he's not prepared to answer: "I don't know". I hide my autism better, but I'm still a Rainman inside. And I knew that the first time I caught the movie on cable back in 88 or 89, long before I realized I might actually have the same condition. :cyclops:

No, though I see similarities from when I was very much younger.

How disturbing.

I'd say I have definitely have a better presentation/act. I'm the one who's still bouncing around, ready to absorb every detail that others don't notice when every normal person is falling asleep after partying already. So that's why I'm miles better in presentation.

So I'm totally more hf, but I have no idea about whether he's milder, same or more severe in all the impairments that come with ASDs.

Rainman is Hollywood's version of autism. Since the ooOoOoOAnaOoOoOoo version is no blockbuster, it can't compare.

The only thing I have in common with Rainman, is that I must fight not to freak out when a smoke alarm goes off. Or any other high pitched, loud noise, for that matter. And I always wondered how he could have sat in that loud, noisy casino, with all the people pressing around, and all the bright lights, for hours. Without melting down.

Rainman was a savant which made him less functioning.

A question of balance topic

The character of Rainman (Raymond) is an autistic savant. The only similarity between myself and such a savant is that, like me he obsessed over certain situations and objects, as do I. But I have no extraordinary skills, but if I did, I might be lucky and have someone make a Hollywood film out of me!!

Alas, I lead a boring life.

Is having 3 million $ a similarity between you or a difference? :)
