People wonder why there are those who end up shooting places up. I wouldn't surprise me if this happens to your former employer one day.

:( Very sad. Its enough you went fired and now this....Im sure you would be better off at another place where they treat you fair and decent. Im glad you found a person who saved your dreadful situation. I hope you can leave these experiences in piece as part of your past soon!

It sounds like something bullies would do. They tell you to do something silly if you want X. I'm shocked it's something employees would do too. Amazing how grown ups can be that childish.

Thank you everyone for your comments and reassurance. I'm often insecure about these things, thinking I'm the only one who sees them the way I see them.

Greentea,
It's plain to see what they were trying to do, cause you some distress and embarassment and I have been in similar situations more times than I can count but I have to admit one thing. What the maintenance man did was truly decent and a lot of times no one will step up to the plate and help out. People I thought were actual friends went right along with the inside joke silently laughing along with the people who had open contempt for me. That's why this guy helping you out makes such an impression on me because I know what it's like when no one cares, even people who "pretend" to be friends. It's a good way to find out who your true friends really are.

I totally agree with this sentiment. May you move on to greener pastures!

@ Greentea I've been in a similar situation a few months ago (not so much the chair thing as the job loss) and in the end things turned out fine - in a way it's been an impulse to make some changes I should have done a long time ago. I just wanted to say I wish everything works out for you in the end, you seem to have had a really tough time lately.

Good luck!

So they wanted you to drag something all the way to somewhere else, and someone saw and offered to help you share the burden? Why I don't see any reference to anything else there at all.

But no really, I think that's not only scandalous, but stupid too. That office space is going to be used by someone else, and then the chair will have to be moved back. It is much easier to send someone over to inspect it.

That was ridiculous. To be honest, IMO, the good part about all this is they did lay you off which means, they are having financial troubles, which if we are lucky, the gov't won't bail them out and let them fall off the bankruptcy bridge and die. So they add unnecessary steps and expenses to perform those steps, where else do they do that? And then they lay off employees.... Lousy financial management will cause financial problems. Somebody should have read the management for dummies book. Either way, I hate companies like this, and I don't want them in my economy. If they are big enough to make it here in West Virginia, or they are online, let me know the name of the company so I can cease and desist from any future purchases. (You can PM me if you wish) Thinking back to Will Ferrell's George Bush impression, they are now a part of my axis of evil.

They're constantly laying off people and recruiting new ones. I knew this before I accepted the job. But then again, many people have worked there for many years and not been sacked.

I've heard of companies like that. I think what happens is that they keep hiring people to help them get the work done knowing the higher ups are going to eventually force some lay offs, and then they lay off x amount of people, wait a while, then hire for the same positions all over again so that way, the next time they have lay offs, the guys working so many years' jobs are secure, if that makes any sense. There's a company in this area that has been doing that for years, and everybody knows it and knows why. I hate places that do that. It's so unproductive. If you can't afford to have some longevity with your staff, then you don't need to be in business. I'm willing to bet the guys that have worked there for years whose jobs are very secure are fairly lazy compared to the ones who got laid off and the new hires that got to stay on (for now).

They constantly do mass firings, where they fire the employees they like the least. Then they hire a new batch, and in the next massive firings they fire the ones they like the least from that new batch. And so on and so on. So they keep getting bad employees, because anyone who can avoid working for them, avoid it. Due to their reputation of massive firings. But anyway, I was the only one fired from my team.

I think suckasses is the term that applies here.
