Australian Cattle Dogs and Siberian Huskies are the two I'm familiar with, and both behave more dingo/wolf-like than most other types of dogs I've seen.

Cats.
They seem a lot more independent, don't smell as bad when they get wet, can tell when you're upset...
The cat I grew up with as a child was the best, we would play (I'd always have playful scratches on my arms) or race each other up the stairs.
And when I was upset, she'd let me crawl into her basket:)

The only downside is that their canned food smells so bad, so feeding them is a real drag.

Had both as pets, cats are far better. They're much smarter and keep you company and sit with you when you're sick.

People who aren't used to pets will go dog because they have the misconception that cats are evil. Must convert them >:D

Cats are nice. I have one. His name is Nakki. He is loving and REALLY soft. I love to pet his fur but he isn't very "interesting" to me because he mostly just hides in closets and sleeps all day long. I tend to prefer small dogs. Dogs are generally loyal and loving while cats are secretive and standoff-ish. The dogs I have had have actually been small enough to ride in the basket of my bike!! I have taken them with me all over the place and they have always slept with me and spent the majority of their time sitting with me. I had a little bichon that actually hung out in my desk drawer when I was in graduate school!! I made him a bed in the bottom drawer! I typically dislike large dogs because they tend to have a strong odor, they tend to drool and have hot/heavy/stinky breath, LARGE poop that has to be cleaned up :eew: , etc. Small dogs are virtually odorless because it is very easy to bath them. In fact, my little maltese "Harvey" usually smells like baby shampoo!! Small dogs also do not have the same hot/heavy/stinky breath that large dogs seem to have. They also have little poop!! Harvey is trained to use a litter box, too!! He is smaller than most cats, so he has plenty of space in the litter box to pace about and turn and all of the weird things dogs do just before they "go". After the dog goes..... my cat comes along and covers it up for him!! It's all pretty neat and tidy so far as the issue of "poo" is concerned. The only problem that I have with Harvey is his barking. He has a very shrill, high pitched bark that drives me right up the wall. He is only a year old right now and I am working on training him to not bark. It is possible to do this. I have had three other small dogs in my life (a bichon, another maltese and a teacup poodle). They were all trained to stop barking on comand!! It just took a little time to get them to learn to do it. After the barking thing gets cleared up..... little dogs are WAY COOL!! I like to make cloths for my dog, too! He has a whole wardrobe of outfits tailor made just for him! Here are photos of my little friends!! ! Harvey is about 6 pounds and Nakki is about 15!! They actually play together, sleep together and use the same "box". It is CRAZY!! !

Definitely cats. I've always liked them (I have 14!) But never cared for dogs - they're noisy, smelly, hyper and overly-needy.

I prefer cats. I tend to be afraid of dogs.

Cats are independant but they comfort you when you're sick and they are so cute. By the way, I can understand them, I know what I can do with them... not with dogs.

I like both just about equally, and thus can not vote in poll.
Preference for me tends to be about an individual of the species, rather than the species itself.

I'm a cat person myself. I would, however, like to have a retired drug dog (maybe military) when my kids are teenagers :)

I had cats before. I got rid of them because they got territorial with the baby. Tried fish since then, and it was a lot of work and they ended up dying from some extra algae growth that I couldn't control. I'll figure I'll wait till the kids are old enough to pick out their own animals.

But I will say that I think I prefer cats only because I feel like I understand them better. It's funny that when a post was made asking people what they'd re-name Aspergers as, many responses said, Cat Syndrome.

On the whole using the bathroom thing with animals
Cats do generally like to go outside or litter box. Males, however, if not neutered will have a tendancy to spray. Most cats are pretty picky about their litter box (not only with the brand of litter, but how often you clean and change it). If you have too many cats for the space you have to offer, you increase the odds of them peeing everywhere for territorial purposes. I also noticed unhappy cats will use the bathroom in places they know upset you the owner (like if you were gone longer than they wanted you to be). Some cats have been trained to use a toilet, but it is highly recommended that you never train them to flush for purposes of your water bill. Also, to add, in general maintenance, I think females cats are easier to care for. The females are generally more temperamental, but they are also generally more independent and clean.. IMO. Also, if you have kids, I think male cats are better for kids cause they generally have more a tolerance for things that bother them (IMO).

As for dogs, all dogs need to be trained. You really don't have to train a cat, but you do a dog. It's not just the bathroom deal, but you have to train them to not bark when they are not supposed to, etc. The other thing, no matter where your dog goes to the bathroom, you will be picking up the poop (or stepping in it).

Cats generally, but it depends on the cat (much like people).
I love dogs too though, except the small yappy breeds.

I adore dogs and have done for as long as I can remember. I'd give almost anything to have one.

I've noticed that a lot of cat lovers in this thread have mentioned about cats being sensitive to mood and illness. This is what I love most about my cat. I have been ill all week, and she is being sweet, cuddling close and staring at me with concern in her big, lovely green eyes. Once, when I was feeling discouraged and was crying, she came over and tapped my foot with one paw, as if to say, "Please don't cry!"
