I voted yes but hated it.

I didn't want to in the first place. Then this girl asked me and I didn't want to say no. I sort of liked her but not really, and certainly didn't want the prom to be my first date with her. Second date in my life at that point. Well, here I was, I'd agreed to go to the prom I didn't want to go to with I girl I didn't really like. Sounds like a great time, no?

I was, however, intrigued by the idea of possibly "getting lucky" that night. I'd heard that such things tended to happen on prom night, and I suppose looking back I can say that was the main reason I did go. Will it ruin the story if I say it wasn't even close?

So we go to dinner beforehand at a fancy restaurant. Luckily I was with 2 other couples and most of us knew each other fairly well. All the guys were friends and the girls were all friendly. It was high school- you knew who most people were even if you never spoke to them- and nobody was in opposing cliques, so dinner was pleasant enough. I didn't talk much. I was busy being VERY uncomfortable in my suit. First time out to dinner in a suit- hot, cramped, irritating fabric- but at least that was it. Food wasn't very good though (as an aside, it was an Italian restaurant. Italian isn't worth going out for unless it's a 5 star place. 95% of the time you can do better at home) and expensive. The only positive I've learned was no booze bill, we were too young.

Prom itself unmemorable. At a hotel, strictly monitored, dancing, etc. I don't think I danced and I don't remember talking to my date. I don't think we stayed more than 2 hours. Plan was to go to Friendly's, meet up with some friends, and then go to the after-prom party. This is where my memory picks up again. It's about 2 miles between the hotel and Friendly's, so (sober) I take the girl and head off. Exactly halfway between the two is the City Police Headquarters, and in front of this building is where I had my first auto accident!

A slick downhill turn, oily from an earlier truck accident, and I lost control, crossed lanes and hit a puckup headon. He had seen me coming at him and stopped, more or less, and I wasn't speeding, so we hit at about 20 mph. Still a big crunch, neither car drivable. It's eleven o'clock on prom night. I'm standing in front of the police station with two totaled vehicles in front of me, an angry truck driver, a freaked-out date (Do you think by now she was regretting it?) and nobody to call- friends were all out and my folks were out of town. No cell phones back in those days. Ha! It was only 12 years ago. SO we walked to Friendly's... and did I mention it was raining?

Arrived just as everyone was leaving for the party- that, at least, was good luck- so we hitched a ride. Around this time even I was picking up the signals- no 'getting lucky' for me! Hahaha... She didn't even speak to me the rest of the night. I slept on the ground outside the party... after all that I just couldn't take going inside. H*ll of a prom night I tell you!

Went to the first dance in HS, had a horrible time, never went to any others. I'm at a loss to think of things that would be less fun. Given the choice between staying at home and doing nothing and dropping $100+ so I can dress up and go to a crowded room with bad music and people I kind of know I chose home.

I attended my prom five years ago. I felt inspired by my being in the drama club. It may have the 11th hour, but I managed to go with a group. I said to myself, "If I can't get a date, I'm not going and that's that."

Luckily, there was this young woman I was going out with at the time, so I managed to go with her and a group totaling seven (there were originally six, but I was surprised to see that another person joined us.) We all had a great time, and I consider that the high point of my high school career.

Why would I? It would've been torture from being scared out of my mind due to everyone staring at me because they would never expect me to do something so.......normal. I never could understand what the big deal was about prom. You dress up in a gown, try to get a date and spend hours mingling and chatting with other people you never got to know all those years in high school. It didn't sound fun to me at all so I decided it would be a waste of time to spend $35 for admission plus $150 on a dress I'd never wear again.

Thanks for posting such an entertaining story Hermit! One of those stories you can look back on and laugh about but it must have been unbelievably unbearable at the time.

Monastic,

What a great story.

It's very affirming for those of us who didn't fit in to share such great memories.

Too bad for the Prom Queen!! !

I did go, but with a coworker who was a wee bit older than me. It was OK...

She is now gone. :(

However, noone from school would have wanted to go to prom with me. If someone did, they'd abandon me right as they came in. There was this one girl, but a prom dress would cost her family or her, five years income. Maybe I'll be nice and take her to prom, we'll see.

Wish me luck.

At least you go to dances.

I understand that as I never went to a school dance, by my own choice. It was strictly because I didn't want to go. A girl did once ask me if I was going when I told her know she made a remark about not getting a chance to dance with me. I actually took offense at what she said.

I never went to any social even in school for that matter, socialization was an area I was very deficient in.

Nobody wanted to go with a "freak" like me. Well, screw them.

Social conscience? never felt the need for it!

I went to my school prom, and had a rather good time. For our school prom, we did not have to have dates--I attended the International School of Geneva in Switzerland. We had the prom in the ballroom of a nice hotel along the lake. Of course, I did not know I had AS back then and tried to act as NT as possible.

Yeah, it was pretty cool.

The dancing was fun, the food was terrible. The photos were pretty lame.

Not too bad, though.

Bland- I HATED high school and teenagers (forgot that I was one) and everything about the STUPID, IDIOTIC social structure of high school, which does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to prepare you for the real world (only for the teen subculture), so the answer would be NO. I did not go to my school's prom and I did have dates and did get asked because by the time I reached high school, I was a bona fide hood. (if any of you are old enough to know what a "hood" is. If you don't, don't feel bad because I still don't know what an "emo" is) And I got around pretty good!

On the other hand, my older sister went to her senior prom and wore a tux with tails!! That was too cool! She had lesbian chic before it was chic! And believe it or not, she was even crowned prom queen that night!! (I love to visualize all of those dippy girls in their elegant prom gowns and my sister with her tiara and tails!!)
