It depends on the context.
Tony Attwood being interviewed by Maja Toudal is definitely a part of the Autistic culture:

(Since Maja is Autistic herself and she is the interviewer here).

Yeah, I don't get it. I'm not good at understanding the varying social implications of certain words. Politically correct terminology is over my head. Glad you're here to help.

I'd like to see some of your posters as soon as possible. I need a strong visual team.

Animators, graphic artists, designers, cartoonists, where are you?! I know you're out there!

I think it would be beneficial to develop a clear list of objectives, then designate teams, each with a specific goal. Here's what I'm thinking so far...

- Compile a List of Potential Sponsors

- Compile a List of Potential Speakers and Featured Participants

- Compile a List of Activities

So far we have a dance, special interest groups, workshops (I'm particularly excited about autistic talent in the workplace), a talent show, etc...

- Write a Formal Invitation to Potential Sponsors

I will try and complete this myself tomorrow. As I've mentioned, I've already been in contact with multiple organizations. I would like to put together a concise and engaging summary of our mission to be presented to each of our potential sponsors.

- Contact Potential Sponsors

- Estimate Attendance

- Estimate Budget (this will take time)

- Formulate Individual Sponsorship Request Criteria

Each individual who would like to receive monetary support to travel and participate (both autistics and family) will submit a written or videotaped entry offering a creative explanation of their motivation for attending, what they hope to contribute, and how participation will impact their lives. Ideas?

- Identify and Assign Key Positions

- Choose Location

- Set a Date

- Plan a Solid Marketting Strategy

- And MUCH more!

This kind of event will require massive energy and focused coordination.

Who wants to help out, and how? Let's try and cover some of these bases!

I know! I started researching how to put this together last night and became quickly overwhelmed! Many organizations hire companies to gain sponsorships, and we are trying to do it on our own. The list of duties is crazy, too. I'm guessing we will also need to have a lawyer handy to work out contacts and liability issues.

Here's some duties to think about

- Head of finances (preparing the budget, providing the money for the
conference);
- Head of programme (what would be the programme like, getting in touch with
the guests, lecturers, participants of the round tables…);
- Head of accommodation (reservation of the hotel and everything concerning the
staying of participants at the location, meals,);
- Head of logistics (transport hotel-faculty-hotel and around the city, sight seeing,
night life…);
- Head of technical support (preparation of classrooms, audio-video equipment,
info-point, photocopying…);
- webmaster;
- Head of public relations

We need a volunteer to break up and organize all these objectives and designate them to teams.

Then, we need volunteer team leaders to start individual threads for each team so that we can organize the discussion and planning of our separate team goals.

I've started a thread for my team already. We will need many teams and volunteers, so step up to the the plate!

First things first, will someone please designate all our priorities under an organized list of teams?

Pretty please?!

I think there's definitely an autism culture and an autistic culture.

Either way, anyone have any ideas of how to approach sponsors? Who is willing to volunteer to do so?

In consultation with Tambourine-Man we have come up with the following:

"I think we need to also figure out what is the most effective mode of communication for group meetings and discussions. Everybody posting in that initial thread is going to get very messy, very quickly. It will be difficult to sift through it all and make decisions.

The initial thread should be narrowed to expressions of interest in involvement only, and other threads should branch off relating to each different team so we can improve efficiency. The idea I had last night was (if alex is up for it) to actually create a new temporary sub-forum devoted solely to the purposes of organizing this event, and then more specific threads can be posted within that sub-forum to improve communication."

^ Quoted from the PM.

Autistic is usually spelled with a capital A.
Like American, Australian, African-American, etc.
(all of these words define identities)

I second that idea! Great thinking!

It sounds so awesome Alex. Alas, I don't think I'd be able to make it. Will be a lot of money and just a huge step to travel all the way to America.

This is better. Right planet is not intuitive.

We need to create a sponsor letter that can be modified to fit each company that we are going to be sending proposals to. Sponsor letters need to have a clearly stated agenda/mission of event, along with how many people will be attending, WHO is attending (age range, family, professional, etc) so they see that they have a good audience for their products, as well as a clearly stated list of why it would be beneficial for them to sponsor. They will also want to know what their money will be providing.

It is a big order, but creating a website solely for the event will also be helpful. It would be a place where both sponsors and attendees can go to get information. I'm not sure if it is possible, but perhaps in the future!

I'm not terribly interested, then again, I've been less interested in socializing lately in general. Last convention I liked going to was an anime convention, but eventually I found myself fitting in less and less.

How about attending via Internet? It'll be convenient for those of us who live far far from USA. We could do the name tag thing. And some of us who go to school in the day or have time differences can film vids first, put them into a thread and play them at the conference.
