Back on point, I am starting to see the OP' s concern more clearly now. I don' t think that beacon is something that you can find externally. Unfortunately, you have to filter out the noise to find what speaks to you.
If you just found out you were on the spectrum, would you really want to go to a site that looks like the modern "General Autism Discussion"? If you're someone who's been employed and living independently for years, you suspected, and now you go to WP for information, and you saw this site, there's a good chance you'd turn right around. As things stand now, if I found WP today, I probably would go away.
OP and others have indicated they know people who looked at WP and declined to join because of the negativity. I personally can confirm the same. There are polls out there on "General" where people would happily answer the poll with "other/please explain", and not post. I suspect some "readers"(as opposed to posters) feel they will be shut down if they post positive things, but I can't confirm that since people arn't posting. Social anxiety, which I think is very high on this board, cuts multiple ways. People don't want to meet online, people don't want to post, people don't want to discuss if they think they'll be shut down.
My concerns here are for Aspies who are uncomfortable acknowleding themselves, and how to encourage all of us to reach out and communicate, both online and offline. I don't think anyone is asking for a "false positive" to be shown to the world, but I think we can all think a little bit before we hit "submit", or PM a moderator to move a thread if we think that it might be better in another sub-forum. We've had two mods post in this thread, and I don't think that we would be adding too much to the moderator workload to move an occasional thread to another sub-forum.
