Catherine Sloper, the "dull but sweet" daughter of a surgeon in Henry James's novel, Washington Square.

Jennifer Jason Leigh played the main character Catherine in a 1997 film with the same title as the book.

Film Washington Square is currently available on Hulu. The book can be downloaded for free.

Ned Gerblansky (South Park): Lack of empathy, little or no eye contact, limited interests, occasional stimming, literal, very few friends, and stoic facial expression.

Bones and Zach from "Bones" (though Booth reassures her in the fifth season that she has empathy, but is awkward, and there's a difference), Spencer from "Criminal Minds" (his "autistic leanings" are mentioned in the fifth episode of the show) and Goren from "Law & Order: Criminal Intent".

These have all been mentioned previously, but I find it interesting that they are my favorite characters on TV from this century (favorite all-time is Jarod from "The Pretender" and though he is socially awkward, brilliant and obsessive, he has so much empathy I can't put him on this list... his empathy is particularly amazing considering that The Centre tried to brainwash it out of him). On the same vein, I can't place Angelo on here either, as he's defined as an empath.

All the main male characters in Chobits except for Shimbo( he seemed quit NT to me)
Displayed signs of being on the AS or autism spectrum to me.
Especially Heideki and that Dragon fly character.
Heideki ( the main charicter who ended up falling in love with his persocom)
was very socially awkward,
He was addicted to pornography yet was freaked out by the
Idea of actual psysical intimacy, And when He would get frustrated
he would beat on things and roll around on the floor.

Not even close! NOBODY in South Park shows empathy. You can't tell if he's making eye contact because of his shades. He doesn't have a monotonous voice (you can hear his real voice in Mexican Staring Frog). He's one of the few people on South Park another has actually identified as a friend. He likes to party hearty (see Red Badge of Gayness). I have not seen him do anything that could be called stimming.

The best ASD characters on South Park are Butters and possibly Timmy.

How about Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys?

I watched the anime (hasn't seen the manga yet...) The dude's best friend, the blatant Weeaboo arguably is given he's obsessed over galges and magical girl figurines.....but he's sociala nd has a g/f; though he's angry at the people there f****n' up the games at his college.

The hikkimori protagonist doesn't seem aspie; more like socially anxious and that came out when he got expelled for soem reason......he was social enough in HS and defended the otaku who was bullied; so I dunno. guess the shock scared him.

O.K., this is getting silly. Mr. Bean?! Doctor Who?! Spongebob Squarepants, for goodness sake?!

Firstly, I'd just like to reiterate that the Doctor and Mr. Bean are both aliens, so of course they're not meant to fit in with human social conventions - not because they're socially unco humans, but because they're NOT human!

Adrian Monk is supposed to be an Aspie. And did anyone see that episode where some law students tried to get him his badge back under some Act, and he deliberately failed the test...because he didn't want to be labelled as 'disabled'. That suggested to me that there's an Aspie on the script-writing team somewhere, pushing their Aspie Pride thing! (And good on 'em, I say!)

Spencer Reid is probably supposed to be. And his mother is schizophrenic - see, they've even written the genetics of it in there.

House, Dexter, etc. are certainly different, but I'd like to remind you that there are PLENTY of ways to be different other than being Aspie! Dexter is some sort of sociopathic psychopath, probably; House is just rude and doesn't care. Plenty of NTs out there like that!

But Spongebob, Ed Edd 'n' Eddy, etc...nah. That's just getting silly.

Still, got to put my own suggestion in somewhere... Norma Cenva, from the Legends of Dune trilogy. Here's some ways she's described:

'Too often the teenager spun off on obscure mathematical tangents that no one could comprehend. Norma seemed lost in her own world.'
'...too independent to understand the economics of delegating tasks.'
'...had developed few (social skills) of her own.' (Here, she is trying to very bluntly and to the point tell a very important scientist that he is wrong, and not understanding why - or even noticing that - he is offended and denying it.)

As far as animes go, I would like to nominate Lloyd Asplund from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

For those of you who've seen the anime but don't remember him,, he is the guy with the white hair and glasses who is part of the R&D section of the Britannian military, and is also the brains behind the advanced Knightmare Frame Z-01 Lancelot (the white KNF that Suzaku pilots.)

Although it's never mentioned directly in the anime, there are some very obvious clues pointing to him Asperger's Syndrome. For one thing, one of the running jokes in the anime involving him is whenever he says something weird or rude, his assistant Cecile always offers him "a lesson in proper social ettiquite", to which he responds "no thanks, I'll pass." Also, he ends up being engaged to Milly Ashford, a schoolgirl friend of the protagonist (it's an arranged marriage), but the few times that they are together, Lloyd prefers to rant on about scientific crap rather than attempt to be sociable. During one scene he goes off on a detailed history of a obsolete Knightmare being used at a festival at Milly's school, after which Cecile remarks to her, "So now you know. He really has no interest in the opposite sex."

Yeah, he's a character all right:

I love Monk.

Anyway, I'd put Monk on more of a mid functioning autistic level. He totally can't function without his partner (Sharona or Natalie.)

I'm sort of sad the show's over now... [Vague sort of spoiler like sentence edited out of convenience of non torrenting New Zealand'ers]
