Linus van Pelt from Peanuts often quotes facts and he's attached to his blanket, even though he's too old for a security blanket.

I don't see it in any of the Malcom in the Middle characters tho.

I see it mostly in Hal because of his enormous focus on his strange obsessions. Like the domino episode or when he became insanely obsessed with power walking. Then there was this one episode where Dewey brought home an Autistic friend from school to sleep over, and no one could control him. He was getting into things, trying to reorganize everything and having meltdowns. Then Hal took him aside and pulled out an Encyclopedia and told him he had something important for him to do that helped calm him when he was young. He told him the Encyclopedia had missing letters that needed to be filled in with apen. " Like the Ps and Bs and the Qs??" "Exactly." And after the kid took the book to diligently do his work, Hal and Dewey had this exchange "Wow dad, I didn't know you were that crazy." And Hal told him he went through like a dozen sets of Encyclopedias. Mabe it's supposed to be OCD though, I don't know. Malcolm just seems to be a normal genius, with the usual quirks and problems that go along with being gifted.
What is the name of this episode?

I've skimmed through this entire discussion, and I don't think anyone has mentioned Brian from the television series Spaced.

Has anyone mentioned Eric from Without a Trace? He was the boy that went missing at school, and it looked like he was abducted. He was played by Jake Epstein (Lizzy Mc Guire's little brother) I think.
Anyway he has a C student with very low self esteem. His father actually mentioned when he took him to a specialist that they "brought up words like syndromes and wanted to put him on ritalin." He would have either had AS or Inattentive ADHD.

I skimmed most of the entries...did anyone mention John Laroche from Adaptation (or from the book The Orchid Thief)...I guess he's not so much a fictional character but I've wondered about him.

He is brilliant and learns everything about a topic until he's "done" with it and moves on to the next extreme obsession: tropical fish, ice age fossils, silver mirrors, orchids...

He said he was a weird little kid with no friends. He dresses mix-matched and is missing all his front teeth from an accident but never bothered to get them fixed. He doesn't seem to know how to be around people and says whatever he's thinking (no filter).

A lot of other stuff too...did anyone else see this film (or read the book)?

Sabastian in the movie Blade Runner. The guy who built all those toys and robots in his apartment.

So being intelligent, somewhat socially stunted/quirky and possibly obsessed with something qualifies a fictional character as being on the spectrum?

Congratulations, you just diagnosed most fictional characters with Aspergers/autism. The only fictional characters who I actually think were bona fide ASD are the guy from Pi and Ari from Pop Apocalypse.

Parker from Leverage has not been diagnosed in series but displays several mannerisms and the creator of the show says he intended her to be Aspeger's.

Well, personally I don't actually believe the characters I listed have AS... I just think it's fun to be able to list the qualities they have that I can relate to.

It's just that I'm sick of "ZOMG _______ IS TOTALLY AN ASPIE BECAUSE THEY'RE SMART/SOCIALLY AWKWARD/WEIRD" threads. It's one of the reasons why I don't post here much anymore. Just because someone is smart and socially awkward doesn't mean they have autism. It's like saying that someone is a sociopath because he/she is an as*hole.

I think my disillusionment with those diagnoses came when some people diagnosed Ebeneezer Scrooge, Johnny Depp, and Edward Cullen with AS on separate occasions. Being an as*hole, vaguely quirky, or a creepy f**k doesn't suddenly mean you're on the spectrum. Otherwise, pretty much everyone in the world has ASD.

I concur with myriad previous posters to say that L is an aspie for sure. He is highly intelligent, has impaired social skills, engages in odd habits, is obsessive in his interests and has singleminded interest in his pursuits. It is classic Asperger's.

Kryten from Red Dwarf has some funny traits, but I don't know that he'd make the cut.

Though I love his practicing a particular facial expression and never getting it right.

IMHO, nearly EVERYONE in that strip is on the 'spectrum'.
