NEVER heard the term "inspiration porn" before. 8O

Is THAT what it means?

Parents forcing kids to come to an unpopular kids birthday party?

According to This Wikipedia Article...

Inspiration porn is the portrayal of people with disabilities as inspirational solely or in part on the basis of their disability. The term was coined in 2012 by disability rights activist Stella Young in an editorial in Australian Broadcasting Corporation's webzine Ramp Up and further explored in her TEDx Talk. She rejected the idea that disabled people's otherwise ordinary activities should be considered extraordinary solely because of disability.

Criticisms of inspiration porn include that it "others" people who experience disability, that it portrays disability as a burden (as opposed to focusing on the societal obstacles that people who experience disability face), and that reducing people who experience disability to inspirations dehumanizes them, and makes them exceptionalist examples.

The 2016 TV show Speechless explored the concept in an episode where it explains inspiration porn as the "portrayal of people with disabilities as one-dimensional saints who only exist to warm the hearts and open the minds of able-bodied people."

Sometimes, disabled people go to extraordinary heights in order to do ordinary things. And extraordinary things. That should be something to celebrate.

Why must people always put a negative twist on things????

Yeah. That's how it strikes me.

Me, too.

I had never heard of "inspirational porn" and my best guess was that it was pictures of angels.

Angels doing anal?

Well it is "porn", so that must be what you imagined them doing!

Inspiration porn isn't actually literal, sexual porn, it's just a name for something that's supposed to inspire us, like a photo and description of a disabled person doing everyday stuff, and non-disabled people think disability means inability, and they say something like, "he/she is an inspiration to us all" and other sappy nonsense. Of course, I feel usually the opposite of what it's supposed to do.

So when I am relaxed and nothing is on so I am not wound up, and I am exploring some sort of coastl footpath like this.... I feel like I am 24 to 29 years old.

Image

But when I am quite anxious and feeling the effects of working through a string of multiple shutdowns I feel about 100 or more years old. It feels like I am trying to work in a suit of armour made from lead where I want to keep over and die as it is easier then trying to do my job where every movement requires such effort that I question my sanity for working there.
And if I don't take it easy I begin to fully shut down and my vision starts to go like this...

Image

and keeps going darker and darker and I get a loud tinitus noise from medium pitch going down into low pitch as my eyesight goes to total darkness by which time I have no bodily strength and I am collapsed out on the floor.
When collapsed on the floor in this condition, I am still aware of my surroundings in like I know if people are there, but myhearing has gone very fuzzy so I don't make sense of anyone or anything. Also when my sight has completely blacked out, by which time my whole body is on the ground, like it or not... The loud tinitus hits a low pitch and then stops. Is like when it hits the lowest point where I see nothing as all is black, it is as if it has done its worst and is no longer needed.

I was joking. Making a riff on what the person above was saying.

I get what it friggin means. But what I don't get is why its bad. Would you rather have handicapped folks sink into despair?

Well...in a WAY I get it. Inspiring stories are like anything else in life- they can be a double edged sword.

A funny lady I worked with and I got into a really odd conversation once. We were talking about what books we read. She liked contrived fantasy novels. I said that I prefer non fiction, and was about talk about things like history and science, but she interrupted me by saying "oh I cant handle non fiction". It turned out that the type of nonfiction that she "couldn't handle" were things like "some woman who escapes from Somalia, and then does real well here...graduates top of the class in Harvard...well....good for you". The upshot was that she found stories like that...NOT inspiring...but the opposite...depressing and demoralizing (because in her mind such stories make HER look bad- apparently).

You can't watch TV without seeing everyone as freaks from another planet. (I mean, the Neurotypicals).

I can't relate to them at all.

"Because I don't want to" is a good-enough excuse for you to get out of doing anything, and you don't understand why no one else seems capable of accepting that.

in channel surfing, stumbling upon a middle ages historical drama and being preoccupied with the thought, "MAN! those people hadda stink to heaven!" (no bathing back then) "how on earth could they stand the stench of each other?!"
