kraftiekortie, my avatar is the picture of the 9 weeks ago born cat in the Theater where I do voluntary work.
Her name is "Streepje" (which means "little strip" in English).
Her two brothers are adopted, one already left and the other one will leave end of next week and it hurts that they leave, because I have difficulies to understand that humans decide wether a kitten can stay with their family or not, and I observed the symbiosis which is formed from birth on and I doubt that cats are "loners" or how I read called "Asperger's", they talk to each other a lot, interact a lot, especially the mother, she is like a transmitter of (beautiful) cat-sounds (which the non-autistic people call "moaning"), to keep the kittens close to her and safe and she was calling the adopted kitten, which has left, for many days and searched for him and it felt painful to watch, I dislike that humans have spoiled up the earth and surroundings that cat-families have to be separated, because they do not have any natural environment to live in, I dislike the thought that they have to forget each other in order to fit into unnatural surroundings.
It is not that humans separate kittens from their natural surroundings that they have the right to label them with a disorder because they just not do understand their behaviour in human terms and make their behaviour a disorder in human terms.
Humans are arrogant to do it.
If one starts to understand the cat's sounds you experience so much depth in it.
Like when people would start to understand the depth of autism.
Not as "special talents due to autism".
People are ignorant when it comes to different-understanding.
Well, I am too as I do not understand people's understanding, especially "normal-people's understanding".
Sometimes I do a bit, I guess.
But I am not sure.

When a humans says that a cat has Asperger's, this human is applying human standards--when he/she should be applying cat standards.

Cats tend to be "Asperger's-like" in their relationship to human beings. And to their relationship with their environment. In their relationships with each other, they are very "NT" (even by human standards).

If they are feral cats, they hang out in packs, and both protect and fight each other. Very non-autistic.

Jensen: Don't you love those sunny and 20 Celsius days?

Wish we had those in NYC in the summer. If the high is 20 Celsius with sun in July, people would start worrying about an imminent Ice Age.

I have a pair of cats that were feral kittens--they like to hang out with me when I'm home. One likes to sit in my lap--the other wants tummy rubs. But as soon as a stranger shows up--they disappear!

I am amazed by how black and white some people are with Asperger's and high functioning autism. There truly is an overlap between ASDs and the "nerd" personality type that is considered "quirky but normal."

Don't believe me? Take a look at this:
http://www.succeedsocially.com/intellectual

No mention of autism or Asperger's, but it sure has some similar advice/"red flags."

The fact is that psychology is political. A group of credentialed people get to decide what spectrum of behavior is normal and where the line to "abnormal" is set. Those who are "captured" by the disorder net (and given a diagnosis) have access to features (such as IEP/special ed + possible welfare) but also setbacks (barred from military, for instance). The way the incentive system is set up has a great influence on diagnosis rates and can alter our perception of "normal" and "abnormal."

Consider the fact there's no precise way to say "socially awkward" or even just "awkward" in Spanish. Culture has a HUGE impact on these judgment calls.

I can say confidently I have become "less" autistic by typical measures since I started high school. Some people call these "coping mechanisms" or "learned adjustments," but what's the difference? Behavior is how disorders are judged. You can basically "grow out" of mild autism; I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I think evidence bears it out.

One has to acquire "coping mechanisms," no matter what. It's called being human.

For people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, as well as other psychological conditions, it's more difficult to acquire the "coping mechanisms" and to implement the "coping mechanisms."

20 would be OK. What do you have in NYC? 3o? 35?
We once had 35. That was awful, because it was a heavy, damp heat. The air in DK is damp most of the time.

We average about 30 for a high during July and August.

This thread is drifting somewhat from its original focus.

But maybe that's not entirely a bad thing.....
