OK here we go again and I know nobody but JD can tell me want is in JD's head. He had a Doctors appointment. I went I ask the doctor what went through JD's mind like when he went in a store does he feel like everybody is watching him does he feel different. does he I get the smell part and kind of the sound part. The doctor said well he sees himself as being the only different person in the world and kind of blew me off or it felt like that. If it is not a rude question How do Autistic people see them self or maybe how do they see other people? what is it like to walk in his shoes are can an NT get an idea of his world from his point of view are someone who has walked his road as a six-year-old. I don't even mean why he goes south (meltdowns) not any of that just how he sees the world Sorry if this question makes anybody upset.I really have a reason for asking,

He probably doesn't feel like everyone is watching him because 6 year old kids are not so self conscious.
He may be more withdrawn and in his own mind than connecting with other people. But that doesn't mean he doesn't love his family.
That's why they say autistic kids are in their own world. Most lack to a certain degree the instinct to connect to other people, but have a lot of activity and thinking going on in their own minds and become obsessed with things like JD is obsessed with the tractor and horse and ranch.
That is all very good for him.

Get him ear plugs that are connected with a string and ear muffs / ear phones. Leave it up to him if possible which he wants to wear, and when he wants to wear them. I would probably want to be wearing ear muffs most of the time out there. Ear muffs come at different levels of protection. I wear heavy duty ones for target shooting and much lighter duty ones for regular outdoor stuff. You might also want to put them on first so he gets the idea and can see that they're harmless.

Im getting some too that was why I ask the next question on how does he see the world it seems to me we spend a lot of time pointing out his difference with things like this and wondered if he feels that to

I'd differ with the doctor on that it was more like I saw everyone else as different. You know like if you were the only human on another planet. With both the people and environment being somewhat alien. That's why they call this place Wrong Planet, because autistic people often feel like they're in an alien world.
thats kind of what I was wondering it seems like it is him against the world

But asking stupid questions wasn't one of them LOL. I once asked a lady in the street: "Why are you fat?"

I really had very little "emotional" inhibitions. Only physical ones like: I couldn't go on the monkey bars because I feared heights so much.

This JD kid is lucky. I like that he's being indulged. I wasn't indulged at that age.

To be fair my dad always told me your life is only as good as the life's of the people around you.so if I'm unhappy everyone around me is unhappy.thats how we see JD. Plus I remember one time we were branding cattle and this old man like in his late 80s stop on the road and was watching Dad walked over and ask him to come help, to be honest, we thought he was in the way he moved slow. I complained to dad He told me if someone wants to help you,you find a place to let them help because that maybe you someday standing on the outside looking in

JD is lucky like I was to have a really accommodating understanding family. And he's especially lucky to have Colton the way I was lucky to have Liam. I bet within a year's time Colton will have a better intuitive handle on JD than anyone else.
Thank you

By the time I was six, I was pretty independent. I did pretty well socially because Aspie girls can do that. But I don't really remember what I felt at that age, moreso what I did. I remember playing alone a lot and tagging behind my older brother. I also played with neighborhood friends in a pretty normal way but I think I was more interested in what we played than in the friends themselves. Like I had a friend named Beth and I loved playing with her because she had a stuffed animal that I loved. So it was kind of like that. I don't remember if I had fears or what I felt a lot of the times. I also did not suffer from sensory overload like I do now because people back then did not do what they do now. Sub woofers that fit in cars had not been invented. It was very quiet so I did not have the issues with sound that I do now. So I did not have have meltdowns as a kid. Those started when I was an adult and became much more exposed to stimuli that I never knew existed as a kid.

Thanks that helps

I guess that's what I'm trying to figure out kind what is in his mind I know only he knows but I just think I can get an idea knowing what other people that live with it every day because all I get from so called NT's aout generic answers you would give a 13yr kid.

And a lot of times NTs will give you answers from what they have been told or from what they have read and a lot of this information comes from other NTs who have observed Autistic kids, not from Autistics themselves. It's like someone trying to tell you how to run a ranch when their only understanding of ranches is from watching cowboy movies.

Hi Colton, I hope you have a good party. It might still be a good idea to have in mind a space away from the party where someone can take JD if he gets overwhelmed.

Do you know who Temple Grandin is? She is autistic, an autism activist and an expert on animal science/behaviour. Some of her writing on autism may help you and your family to better understand how JD sees the world. Some of her work on animals may be of interest to you as well.

Maybe have a look at this page and see what you think:
